What exactly did you paint in?

Excellent atmospheric pictures. Really love the faded lettering on the garage.

I was quite happy as I took the camera inside to download the pics. Wriggling the camera in through the side door
while keeping the viewfinder sticking outside to frame the shot, and obviously concentrating on the subject and not
the background.
This is the shot without the painted in background. Message to self. Look at everything in the viewfinder dummy.

Wow, that is some serious editing skill! Well done. Even knowing, I can't see the joins in the 'after' picture.

I quite like the original picture as well, the trailer suits the garage scene.

Just noticed the oil spills on the floor of the garage. Another really great touch. I don't think I'd have noticed it was a 12" to the foot background in the original. It somehow looks in keeping. Even the wheel arch on the trailer frames the car.

Thought I'd take some pics. around Nayook township, it was a very windy day and not much happening.
Then I notice this bloke obviously doing the same thing. Thought I won't get in his way, off to another place and there he is again!! So I crossed the road quickly set up again, who pops up in the left of the viewfinder, Yep! Thought I'd sneak around the back of the building, yep still there! Got closer, thought I'd seen him before, we got to chatting, comparing camera's etc. Thought I heard him say
"he thought all camera's were digital, as his was very hands on" !!!! So after the short chat (he didn't have much to say, silent type I guess)
I gave up and went home.

Excellent idea Grant and very well presented. Such individual ideas make the story come to life on garden railways, just as it would be in full size.

This came out of frustration really, trying to decide on another loco build. Although I've added dozens more pics. to the file, still no closer to a decision. I know what I want, just can't justify it being used on my railway, GRRRR!

You're not trying hard enough!
Visiting specials, passing through for works, privately chartered train guesting over the local infrastructure.

Reading during the lock down, discovered how many Fowler B6 road locos came to Australia. I once again measured my Wilesco against the Fowler B6 General Arrangement that is available on the web. The conclusion that except for the width across the rear wheels the measurements all work out for 16mm scale. Now because I'm starting to get a bit frustrated with this lock down business I started trying to make the Wilesco a bit more photogenic from the non flywheel side as that is the how it would normally figure the way the sawmill is laid out.
By adding a new cylinder housing made of sheet brass and adding the low pressure cylinder ( B6's being double crank compounds), a throttle housing with safety valves and whistle (removable to access the lubricator) and some cylinder drains, I was able to move the appearence of the unit closer to the centre line. A rack and hose with strainer for the lifting injector completed the picture. It's still no scale model, but I think it will pass if you squint a bit.
It's Sunday and the mill is closed for the day, and in the late afternoon the engine is returning up the track from the forest to stable at the mill overnight. Still working on the yard layout and fighting terrible backgrounds. Grant.

Just (for the first time) been through the entire thread: I think the pictures are wonderful and the scratch building is off the scale. Fabulous

Mitch, I used the standard Wilesco D405 traction engine, and added the rear lower half of the water tank (it slides out for the burner) along with the strap and rear tow hitch. Also cut a side access for the driver and added steps. A scale steering wheel, boiler bands a tow hitch to the front axle and a smokebox door. I machined a disc to go on the flywheel to represent the Fowler road loco type and made up the typical Fowler roof. I think I made a new chimney, can't remember, though it has too much taper might make another one, plus a set of rubber road tyres. Add a paint and lining job plus the recent cylinder additions and there you have it. Power is about to go off here, got to go.

Well, it certainly looks good to me. Definitely a lot less toylike. I like the way you've caked the wheels in the relevant road surfaces.
