I like Peter's boards very much.

If you wanted a simpler solution you could try the "twigs on a roll" screen stuff - sorry, don't know the real name! It's quite expensive but you can cut a 6' high roll down into two or three useable bits.

I used it to hide concrete blocks on my old line and reallly liked how it looked, very organic, particularly when it had faded/rusted and the grass started growing through it!

Image

For sections less than about a foot high I found that I had to nail it on and then poke a lot of the twigs back into place - they fell out because they're woven into place, but they didn't give any further problems once replaced.

Might work on your line? Don't know how it would withstand assaults by a two year old! Good luck with it, whatever option you choose...

Andrew.

Both of those options look attractive... I've thought of so many options for doing it its getting silly, but the wife has said it needs to be on a budget when I do so unfortunately the plan I had of using welsh roofing slates on end isn't going to happen any time soon :(

There has been a little more progress with the addition of some rocks and the start of the edging.

Mini update:

After much waiting the construction of 2 right hand turn outs has been completed, thus allowing the passing loop to be instated once track maintenance have fitted the turn outs.

Must say a huge thank you to hussra for the advice offered to spur on construction.

Photos will soon follow once track is down.

So, with work having continued on the l&b carriages a little more I ran them around the line a few times to realise that my point work was too tight for these big carriages. This resulted in today's efforts of laying new points and a bit of smoothing out. Click on the image below to view a short vid of the railway as it stands today

Tonight's work resulted in some more rolling stock... Just need to get some grey primer to get these bad boys painted.

I take it these are to bolster your rolling stock list?

Nice pun Brian ;)

I had never built any binnie before so wanted to get some and the kids wanted to be able to 'play with some of daddy's carriages/ trucks' so I figured for a small budget these should do the job ;) next order for binnie stock will be 15 slate wagons for lilla to pull once I get her back at the midland model engineering exhibition on the 20th.

So track maintainance on the cards today. The test was how well could the fox pull all my rolling stock around the tight 2'6" curves... Here's the loco with all the stock

Your new coaches and wagons look great behind that ancient "Lady Anne". I really like the train, it looks fine.

I also think your trackwork is well done. The curves are perfect for that locomotive, just enough to slow her down but not enough that you need to turn up the steam so she blasts away out of control on the straight bits. It's just right, and seems nice and level. I can picture myself having a fine time sitting in a chair and having a cup of tea watching that train chuff around by itself. Well done.

Like Sapper Ant, I would be looking whistfully at MY patio, if only I had one! :(

Thanks Keith! I think the 4' curve at the bottom of the garden needs some work still (gradient too sudden a change). Should be able to run at a smoother more constant pace. But given she's a manual loco and my rolling stock is big heavy I was happy.

With the railway now having had it's first steam up it taught me a few things....

First that with the size of the railway the passing loop isn't needed - this will likely stay though to create a station area.

Second that the small gradient I knew about was far bigger than I thought...

Third that the tight corner at the end of the line needed rethinking.

It also got SWMBO to agree to the track plan I had wanted to build in the first place... So today's work was to adjust the levels at the end of the garden, move the line and enlarge the end curve. The results I'm happy with. :)

EDIT: oops! Forgot to upload the photo

Brilliant, I'm going to keep an eye out. Out of interest how do your binnie bolsters go around your curves? I bought some recently and I was surprised how well they went together for the money. :)
