Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
After a short break for lessons on wildlife and cooking I thought I might return to my thread concerning construction of my garden railway...... can anyone remember that?
My Baldwin build looked complete although its running was still unsatisfactory. I had taken my grinder to the inner walls of the cylinders and re-engineering the front bogie did improve things but there were still issues with certain points (switches) and track at some locations. I thought my tracklaying was good enough to accept most locomotives but the Baldwin has proved me wrong. I had to do something to resolve the problem finally so out came the grinder again and even more material had to be removed..... Not pretty, but necessary.
Fortunately the modifications can't be seen from outside.
In addition I also put a coil spring around the pivot bolt to give more downward pressure on the bogie, this also helps to keep the wheels on track where they previously lifted off. A few circuits proved that the improvements have finally done the trick, at last!

I can always remember your Thread Peter, it’s one of the best….
Is this the bogie I thought was still a little bit close to the wheels Peter…who cares what it looks like so long has it works…..

A shame that you have had to make this mod, Peter. From my recollection, the curves on your railway are not particularly tight. It does sound as if there's a fundamental design flaw with the kit.

Sorry for not commenting earlier but that is a lovely looking loco.
I have a 16mm special, Leighton Buzzard I think, that details a Slaters Chaloner build and I've often thought that was a museum model destined for display and occasional use rather than lots of running. I'll be interested to see how you get on running it though neither of us are majorly into operations side....

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
You're right about limited running but as I have it working I put it to the test to see how it performs with a train just to satisfy myself it was worth the effort and I have won the battle.
Here it is with stock it should feel right at home with.... The rail-guns are a heavy load but the Baldwin has great pulling power, I am well pleased with its performance and appearance. It did have a 'moment' when I let it have full power 'light engine' and, although not fast by any means, it is top heavy (as they were) and decided to fall on its side. Probably caused by a rocking motion rather than sharp curves?

I assume hauling captured guns or has Owain been taken prisoner! I do love the shape of that as a loco, "wagons" aren't bad either!

Great pictures of the locomotive and rolling stock.
I have no idea if it's authentic or not, but it looks good to me.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Just remember.... my railway, my rules! The railway is just an excuse to operate any stock I build, which is a very random selection of items appealing to me at the time. I look at it as a tourist attraction sited on an original line which was abandoned years ago and reopened with a variety of stock from many sources. My main interest is in the building, not operation, so anything goes.

I wouldn't be happy in that locomotive with a big barrel as that pointed at my head. Talking of stress situations at the job.. Great train!

Yes Daan, especially as the Fat Controller has his finger on the trigger to ensure his staff are behaving!

Do I detect a slight Welsh accent struggling through there, Jim?

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
You might remember this from October 2017 when I posted details about our local club annual exhibition and competition, which took place in Carmarthen yesterday.
We also had one Junior Member who entered her 'Train set in a tin' and won the Junior section trophy.
My 'portable garden railway' measuring just 24 x 19 (inches) which competed against seven other senior modellers managed to win its class by public vote.We also had one Junior Member who entered her 'Train set in a tin' and won the Junior section trophy.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Well done Peter, I still like it as much as I did last October and it doesn't surprise me in the least that you won.
I still think you should install it in the park in your vllage, I'm sure the local Model Engineering Society would be pleased.

Congratulations Peter, I love that little layout. It would have taken something extraordinary to beat it.
