Time to build a railway...but where?
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
We've also had snow - but it was the slushy kind which then froze - so now a bit like concrete .....

I was going to suggest it's time to get the snow plough out... but it maybe a job for the wagon-mounted flame thrower...
Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
We saw about 3 snowflakes mixed in with the drizzle yesterday.

It looks as though you all got off pretty light then, this is how it looked when I took the dogs out this morning....
And it snowed again before lunch.

Happy New Year Peter,
We got about 1 inch of snow this morning about 2.30am, so it's our first snow of the new year. It's no where near as bad as what you get Peter, but it's nice to see, not to walk in...
This is on Anne's car. Not a lot really...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Well, it's kit time again. I'm supposed to be decorating the kitchen, but there are more important things to do!
Two laser-cut MDF kits arrived this morning from David at M.Prints, http://www.sixteenmills.co.uk/ I have made his kits previously and can highly recommend them...... This is a horse box based on one on the West Clare Railway. As you can see, there are so many individual parts which are all superbly cut and fit together perfectly. The illustrated instructions are printed on two, double sided, A4 sheets and are simple to follow. The only thing to add are couplings of your choice.
I have done reports on laser-cut kits before and discovered there are huge variations between manufacturers, few are as complete and as detailed as this so there is clearly a need for some to catch up. There is also the question of price, which is of major concern, but these kits compare favourably and represent excellent value for money.
I have already started the build so will add to the thread as it progresses.

Can't wait to see this build Peter.
It does look a very nice bit of kit.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
The horse box is progressing nicely, all of the sections fit perfectly and form a strong basic box on which to add the panel detail and additional bolt heads if you wish. I have, and there are 246 in total!
This shows the body with a first primer coat awaiting finish colour. I usually prefer to paint the side panels and overlays separately but only the end panels are made that way on this kit, so I will have to do my best to keep a steady hand and pick out the individual sections as required. Currently awaiting a delivery of Citadel acrylics from 'Goblin Gaming' on-line, fast service and 10% off.

Looks to be a nice horse box Peter.
Couple of questions if I may.
What type of Citadel paints to you use, there are different types isn't there. I don't airbrush in the winter Peter, because it's to cold and damp in the garage, even though the roof has been done. So it's brush at the moment.
Second, I see you have put metal wheels on the kit, where do you buy them from mate. They do look like they are brass...

Rod, this is a link to the paints which I prefer. The 'Base' colours are ideal for brush paint as there is more pigment but can be thinned with water if required.

The metal wheels are from my stock-box but almost certainly bought from I.P Engineering. Other manufacturers are available.

Looking great so far Peter! Have you airbrushed the primer on? Interesting to read about your use of Citadel paints, I tried brush painting a few parts using some Humbrol enamel paints and couldn't get a good finish. Assume Citadel/acrylic is superior?Peter Butler wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 9:24 pm The horse box is progressing nicely, all of the sections fit perfectly and form a strong basic box on which to add the panel detail and additional bolt heads if you wish. George, the primer is just Halford's rattle can grey which I use on all of my models. Plastic primer on HIP.
There has been much discussion about Humbrol paints and not much has been favourable. All of the Citadel paints are good quality and brush extremely well.

That's a lovely horsebox Peter...
With all your livestock wagons you could have a "County Show" themed running day in the summer, with a train for the animals and an extensive passenger service...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Oh, if only!..... I remember the times we attended such show regularly throughout the year, displaying our models in marquees, great times were had by all, but may become a thing of the past?
True, I could hold a virtual County Show, but it isn't the same without my friends around to share it too.

You are absolutely right Peter, without friends with you to show what you model, it is never the same...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Can't remember if you're building the Horsebox at 45mm or 32mm gauge?
The West Claire used spoked wheels that I include in the kits. As you're using steel ones I guess you're on 32mm as I supply Binnie 29mm spoked glass filled nylon for that gauge and blackened steel rimmed wheels for 45mm.
I built one just before Christmas for a customer and sprayed it with Halfords Ford Meadow Green.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?
Hi Dave and welcome to the Forum. The kit will be made to 32mm gauge and has been fitted with slightly smaller diameter wheels in steel. I like to add weight low down and felt the overall height of the wagon would fit better with my existing stock. It doesn't matter to me whether they are correct for the wagon, I am happy with the overall impression rather than such detail......... my railway!

Thanks.
Just have to get used to posting things.
I tried to add a photo, but it rejected it.
I suspect it's too large as it's from my phone and I don't have a resampling adjustment on it unfortunately.

The reason you could not post a photo was because you were a new user and new users have a very restricted set of rules that they can't and can't do, this is all down to spam accounts. Once you are out of that group after a given number of posts, then you have all the rights of a regular user. Just so you know, you are now out of the new user group so can post to your hearts content with pictures and all. I doubt your picture is bigger than the limit so it might be worth trying again
