If my accounts of messing about in the garden sound like stories I reckon that's a result of pretty much learning to read on Thomas the Tank Engine books! I think there's still a part of me that thinks that if I'm useful enough the Fat Controller will give me my very own branch line... Or maybe that's what the (WH)WHR is??!

Unfortunately, the apples are pretty sour - nice in a crumble though...

Hi all,

Having been reminded by Peter's thread that I need to bring my buildings in for the winter, it seemed time to run the last passenger train of the year. It's a shoddy operation, but the (WH)WHR has some standards and prefers not to run passenger trains when there are no facilities for them...

I was keen to run the Baldwin again (I wanted to check that I hadn't killed the poor thing with the heavy apple train!), and went for a pair of closed carriages - it's too late in the year for opens!

Here's the train leaving Trefechan:


Catching the Autumn sunshine as it leaves the tunnel:


Climbing the bank, with the first fallen leaves evident:


At Clarach, with a dead tree providing Autumnal colour!


And heading back down the line again for the last time this year:


The (WH)WHR will be goods only until about Easter now. although it's unlikely that the locals will even notice, let alone complain...

Even to someone unfamiliar with the WHR, that short train looks just right for the theme. The dead tree even looks good!

Hello all,

To celebrate the Forum's survival, and to assist in keeping the thing alive by providing some content, I thought I'd run a train today, and take a few photos. As it's "business as usual" round here, with no particular changes envisaged, I thought I'd go for the most ordinary train I could think of - Regner "Daisy" (probably the loco that appears most regularly on this thread) and a grotty mixed goods...

Here's the train heading up the bank:


Unfortunately, that one run was all it managed, because the loco's flywheel worked loose and brought it to a stuttering halt, but I managed a couple more runs with diesel No. 6:

That's very flattering, but I assure you you'd lose any envy you felt if you saw my little line! It's short, poorly maintained, and the operations are chaos... The camera really does lie in my case!

Actually, I think that's another reason I like to post on here - when I look back at the photos of past runs I completely forget about the derailments and technical glitches that accompanied them!

Thats all the fun though isn't it Andrew, having mishaps and everything else what goes with garden railways. I think of it like the real world, where there are mishaps everyday usually.

I for one love to see photos of your locos and rolling stock. As for your line, who care's if it maybe small. I would love to be able to run my locos and rolling stock on it.....

Love your line Andrew. I've been following along for quite a while now, love the lovely carpet of green you have going on in most photos!

That entire train just oozes narrow gauge charm. I really like that cowcatcher on the loco, sets the whole thing off for me.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

For a while now I've tried to get out in the garden on New Year's Day - start as you mean to go on and all that... I was hoping that yesterday's thick frost and bright sunshine would continue, but by the time I got into the garden a light drizzle was falling - oh well...

The loco choice was obvious - for simple operation AND great steam effects you can't beat the Regner, and thanks to advice received here and some grub screws kindly donated by Steve (thank you!) re-attaching the loose flywheel that curtailed its last run was the work of about thirty seconds. The morning's duties were very simple - a light engine run up to Penlan to collect the tippers, a couple of round trips of the lower half of the line, and a light engine trundle back down the hill again:

I absolutely agree with Philip. Your railway has settled into the landscape very well Andrew. The shots of the train look exactly like a loco and wagons going about their business, with some reason and to some purpose. I'm not sure what exactly it is that give s this impression but I'm getting it loud and clear. I love it.

Fantastic photos Andrew. I absolutely love your loco in steam, those photos remind why I love and started my garden railway. I especially love the overhead shot by the tunnel...Brilliant.

Thanks chaps! Glad you like the overhead shot Rod, I was looking for ways to capture the impressive plume of steam to best effect!

Funny you should mention that the photos give the impression of real work being done Andrew - one of my aims for 2021 is to enable some sort of realistic goods operation, inspired by Rik's but using Old School technology, probably involving coin flipping and dice! I'm currently working on some removable wagon loads as part of that project. Other aims for '21 include finishing the other five Big Big Train tippers, and finally getting round to repainting the Regner, so I guess it was quite an appropriate train to see in the New Year with.

If all goes according to plan ( ie I can raise enough cash!) next year's NYD train will be hauled by a brand new RH Small England...
