Inspector is coming this Thursday so will know then.

Anyone seen my post about the level markers on my railway, do they look alright?

My guess is that they indicate a position where there is a change in gradient on the track.... is there?
It appears that both you and I have little knowledge about the operation of real railways. My own approach is to think logically and look carefully. If it makes sense then probably it would be an addition to the line for information to the drivers etc. If, however, you just want it for visual impact, then just use it anyway!

Yes, that's it. There's more detail here: http://www.railsigns.uk/sect24page1/sect24page1.html, but in brief:

"Gradient posts are placed, facing the track, at each location where the gradient of the trackbed changes. Most gradient posts comprise a pair of arms, one on either side of a post. The arms are inclined up or down to indicate the direction of the slope and each one has the value of the relevant gradient marked on it. Gradients are expressed as a ratio, e.g. "1 in 200" (or "1:200"). For example, "1 in 500" means that the track rises (or drops) one unit for every 500 units travelled horizontally. Note that a smaller number in the second part of the ratio indicates a steeper gradient. Some patterns of gradient post omit the first part of the ratio, the value of 1 being implicit.

I don't know that they were terribly common on the narrow gauge, but I could well be wrong there. If you haven't got any gradients you could always use the signs to add atmosphere by propping them outside a hut or shed - here's some speed restriction signs which seem to have lived outside Dunster goods shed on the WSR for years (I think there used to be a 100mph one!), and - coincidentally - a gradient marker showing that the grade changes from 1:223 to 1:143...

Cheers,

Andrew.

There's an 'interesting' one on the High Peak railway, at Middleton Top:

Yes, you read that right!
You can read more about Middleton Top Incline here:

I love how, on the post, both gradients look the same!

I guess the angle of the post indicates the direction of gradient, rather than a representation of the steepness.

Yes I think so.

I bought this station shelter ages ago but I thought it was a bit big for 16mm, however, after comparing measurements with well know suppliers of buildings it seems to be in proportion.

I took the wooden base off it this evening which I think improves the look as you can see the station surface underneath it:

Maybe it's just too new looking at the moment?

The building itself looks fine, size-wise, and the newness will soon weather down.
The platform looks a bit narrow for it though, 'elf n' safety would have things to say about the clearances to the platform edge, but not much you can do about that.

I did think that Phil but if I place it at the other station on the loop you can't see the interior as it will face the other way round.

Will keep playing about...

It would only take minutes for you to recess it into the fence and your neighbour could enjoy it too! On the other hand perhaps you could reduce the depth a little?

I agree with Peter, Tom. Just a cm would draw it back to about right for me.

Love all the signs, I would have had them on my new line….And the crossing is brilliant, great things those Lollipop sticks hey Tom…. :thumbright: :thumbright:

If only my neighbours were interested in garden railways we could have one large line running through each others garden's!

The 'inspection' went well on Thursday so the railway is acquiring new staff next week (I didn't say anything about trains did I?):

These two young moggies (I have already started calling them 'The Boys') are taking over pest control duties from my very much loved cat Molly who I lost last year due to ill health (Milo is still with us fortunately):

In other news the RWLR works are in talks with the WHR (Andrew) about a reworking of their Russell so she may be paying a visit to Kent for a little while. Looking forward to playing with a larger loco on my line!

Sorry to hear about Mollie, always a devastating loss to pet lovers (we are never 'owners').
Milo seems to know the score!
Also, shame your neighbours aren't more understanding, time to be thinking more about that intended move to a better place with greater scope, the additional family members will thank you for it I'm sure!

This is Roly:

And this one is Forest (not sure why he was named that, he is quite switched on!)

They have settled in very quickly but I still need to introduce them to the garden and railway.

Back to the railway, it took a few attempts but I finally got the colour I wanted for the crossing. I need to get some white primer for the sign, I will touch in the lettering and sign frames with black:

I have painted the bottom of the planking as well to waterproof it.

What is the ballast that you're using? It would appear to be too small to be pea shingle or horticultural grit and in my view looks quite realistic size wise.
