Welsh Pony
Welsh Pony
Welsh Pony to steam again! According to Ffestiniog GM Paul Lewin, a restoration management plan has been drawn up that allows Pony's restoration to start in Winter 13/14.
I've just been reading about that myself, they sent me a facebook link
to the article on their website.

That's excellent news as long they keep that lovely livery she currently wears!
Bet that James can't wait to fire her!

Yes, I wondered about Mountaineer... Princess and LT seem fair enough, but it would be a shame if Mountaineer was left unloved at the back of the shed. Guess we'll have to wait and see...laurence703:84530 wrote:This Everything except Princess and Livingston Thompson... and probably Mountaineer... Which wasn't mentioned in the article...
Andrew.
Im actually disappointed by this. There needs to be one representative sample which retains the majority of its historical material.
This is railway PRESERVATION e.g. preserving what we have in original condition being respectful of historic material. So if someone wants to run a locomotive surely the first, the very first thing they need to do is asssss how much historic material would be destroyed. How come is it that for things like buildings and even pipe organs there are strict limits on what you can and cannot do to their historic fabric but not, apparently, with railway engines? Alas, its more evidence of "playing trains" rather than preservation and conservation!!!!

I think that has been taken into account by the clearly stated promise to leave Princess and Livingston Thompson untouched.SapperAnt:84551 wrote:Im actually disappointed by this. There needs to be one representative sample which retains the majority of its historical material.
Well, now we know the buffer-stops work! (Heard at 2013 "Longest Day" solstice steamup)

Also from what I've been told a while back, most of the loco is in surprisingly good condition so there won't be a massive amount that'll be changed. Not that it bothers me at all...TommyDodd:84552 wrote:I think that has been taken into account by the clearly stated promise to leave Princess and Livingston Thompson untouched.SapperAnt:84551 wrote:Im actually disappointed by this. ...now if a certain ALCo was being returned....

I think that with some locos if they're in that bad a shape from rust or years of neglect you wouldn't be able to restore them without having to renew some of the original parts. I think the case with welsh pony is that it could've been getting to the point where if something wasn't done about its condition then eventually it would be beyond repair. So in some ways they are conserving it as I'm sure they'll use a lot of its original parts but why do all the work to have a loco that would be sat in a shed and not out earning its keep? Another loco on the roster is what people will pay to see
Agreed re the ALCO
The fact that they made so many changes to what was already a historic locomotive.... there's probably very little left of the historic material. but you never know....the cylinders and cab are definately new. I remember seeing a list somewhere of the changes made and bascially theres not much ALCO.

Awesome!!!!! I'd love to see the Alco in steam!JMORG:84556 wrote:The ALCO is to be restored as well (according to Ffestiniog on Facebook). It was stated that the ALCO will be after Pony!
As for Welsh Pony, with it in steam will surley mean it is seen more that it is at the moment, as I guess its stored in Boston lodge at the moment?
Thanks

I certainly believe in the importance of retaining a representative selection of engines conserved in their pre-preservation condition. However, we can't preserve everything in aspic, and the sight of three Englands in steam together is certainly one to look forward to!
(Personally, I nurse a dream of one day making that four Englands by building a replica "small England" in original condition...I expect that's a project for the very distant future, however!)
