There's one propped outside the goods shed at Dunster that's home to the West Somerset PW Dept. I'm guessing they don't have any immediate plans to use it...

She did - there are photographs to prove it in various publications. IIRC the number changed at the same time the name was applied, i.e. while she was being prepared for the Wembley exhibition.

I believe that whether you like or dislike 4472 or 4468 or any of the other locomotive in the collection the main point is that this and the other 2 Museums should not close. I agree that the 4472 restoration has not been handled in the best way but at the same time we must look at the wider picture and hope that they survive :D

the NRM is a joke

Flying Scotsman and Mallard have a celebrity status in British History much like the Queen, Millions of pounds goes to them, but we still appreciate their status even if they are outdated in modern life.

To those who remember the heydays of the railways they may not be the Castle, Patriot, Black 5 or 9F that could be seen keeping the system in check day after day, but then not everyone can enjoy the limelight....
Curious that you don't mention the other Class 8 XP locos, the King, Duchess and Merchant Navy.

There is now a petition for those who think it shouldn't close.

My personal feelings are that I love the NRM.  It was one of the places Tim took me when we were dating and he was starting to show his love for trains to me. I was fascinated, and I would hate to see it close.

Sure, the locos could go to preservation societies who might actually be able to put the locos to use, but at least the NRM is safe storage for many items that simply wouldn't find a home in a preservation society (I'm thinking about all the stuffin the depth of the stores....even the NRM doesn't have the room to display it all!).  And what about the library at the NRM?
