Chuffing odd.....!

Post by ge_rik » Tue Aug 21, 2018 9:00 am

They say there is a prototype for everything. The soundcards on my battery steam outline locos are sometimes criticised for not sounding realistic or because the chuff is out of sync. We had a ride on the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway (former Bowaters Rly) this weekend and one of their Kerr Stuart Brazils (Leader) had a very distinctive asymmetric chuff. See 2:05 and/or 9:50 -

I'm sure some of the live steam fraternity here will be able to immediately diagnose the problem, I had to ask the driver.

I'm seriously tempted to make a sound card which emulates this little loco - just to confound the critics..... :?

Valve setting, I reckon. It does sound very odd.

Notice though, at 01:24, that it makes no chuffing noise at all when running light engine.

Almost certainly valve timing, but that could be because of other things such as wear in the motion. I enjoyed the video. I especially liked the concrete fencing/bridge parapets and lightly overgrown track.

The driver reckons that when they needed to replace one of the eccentrics (ie mechanical, not human), they 'borrowed' one off another loco and it's not quite right and they can't adjust the timing any further to counterbalance it. He says she goes quite well in reverse but is a bit temperamental when going forwards.

Flying visit, Tom. Day trip out by train from London. Only in London for the weekend. Maybe next time?
