In the meantime, I thought I'd look in to see if any progress had been made on the Mystery Carriage. Unfortunately, the shed doors were closed, but these were propped outside:


They appear to be interior partitions, very much like those in the Gladstone Car, which is odd, because we've already got one of those... Hmmmm....

The mystery carriage: is it old F&WHR? Unless it's another Gladstone I cannot guess what other carriage has partitions like that from the NWNGR (the workman's and one corridor carriage didn't have doors)...
The only alternative is an FR van? Again they had mainly compartment stock.

Hi all,

A brief update on the FR coal wagon, a modified Phil Sharples kit. It's now in one piece, and the body is painted, including some tare weight markings - not great, but they'll be hidden by heavy weathering. In looking at reference photos I realised that in its current guise it only has four planks, unlike the six sported by the model. I was relieved to find another picture showing six planks earlier in the preservation era - who knows how many it had in the 20s???

The kit includes a false floor, so I've taken the opportunity to add some scraps of lead - it's nice and heavy now.


A good sanding will be next, then painting and adding the strapping, followed by weathering...

That looks interesting and while I was trying to work out how much lead you had fitted (quite a lot!) I also noticed that one end has horizontal planking and vertical at the other, is that correct?

The lead was some I picked up outside a neighbour's house after some roofing work, and which just happened to fit - the wagon now weighs over 9 oz, possibly a little heavy, but it's got a lovely "trundle"...

Yes, the wagon has horizontal planking on both sides and one end - the other end, with the vertical planking, is the door - it should make sense when the strapping goes on...

Hi all,

Here's a quick coal wagon update, which is now nearing completion. In this picture it's had its paintwork distressed, strapping added and final gaps filled and awaiting painting:


I've just ordered a FR-style number plate from Wood Valley Works, so once the strapping's touched up and the plate added it just needs a little more weathering and it'll be ready to go...

Glad you like it, thanks - I thought it would contrast nicely with the "beer wagon" which is in a much better condition.

I've finished the paintwork since posting and added some additional strapping to the non-opening end - the super glue came out rather quickly and I now feel like I've got an extra layer of skin on several fingers.. Avoided sticking them together though, so that's a bonus...

Thanks Rod! And yes, there'll definitely be a photo of the finished wagon - I kind of see posting a final photo on here as the equivalent of rolling a wagon or carriage out of the workshop for the first time. Except that my new rolling stock often looks like it's on its last legs rather than brand new, I guess!

Looks good Andrew! What did you use for the handle in the end?
I got two of Phil's coal waggons, they're easy to put together but the rivetting is not my favourite part!

Hello! The brake handle is just cut from plasticard - I'm surprised that he didn't include one like he did with the beer wagon, just an oversight I guess... And yeah, the representations of rivets aren't great, but they make it easy to position nail gems!

As the weather was good, we had some trains running today:

The Accucraft Baguley hauled a WHR passenger set, tailed by WHHR carriage 6: Moel Tryfan also had a WHR freight - WD wagon and slate waggons. And for some fun:

Love that shot of the single Fairlie with the slate wagons is really great. You could enter it into the photo competition.
