Hi all,

It's taking a while, but I'm making some progress with FR Van 4, which now has look out duckets on both sides, and matchboarding on one...




I guess I'll carry on gradually working away at it over the winter with the aim of having it ready for spray painting when the weather warms up again in the spring...

It's looking great Andrew. You will have your'e work cut out putting them boards on, but it will look fabulous with your expert hands i'am sure.

It's been a while since I've added some WHR stock:
Modern WHHR carriage 6 in the current livery. Was unsure at first how it would look but now I think it looks great.
Brake van (the unnumbered one) in both liveries! Both Jurassic
The NWNGR van next to the Jurassic and modified IP wagons.
Porthole Bug box 12.
Lineside Hut Oakeley quarries coal waggon. I've cut 5mm from the top and bottom to get it more to the correct height.
Lineside Hut Slate waggon; modified to look more like the Rhosydd quarry waggons. Note the differences between it and the Binnie behind.

Very nice rolling stock. I do like the Lineside Hut slate wagon..

I particularly like the WHR brake (I must get round to building one this winter!) and the "porthole" bugbox, a lovely looking carriage, I think. I wasn't too sure about the ("Prisoner" inspired, I think???) livery on the WHHR 4-wheeler either, but I agree, it looks great on your model.

I've been cracking on with some modelling myself recently, principally with another Phil Sharple kit, for an early FR coal wagon this time. I never seem able just to take a kit from the box and build it as per the instructions, and this one's been no exception... Firstly, I turned it inside out, so that the planking detail's on the inside - now stained with my usual vinegar and wire wool mixture. I've added new veneers of 0.5mm ply to represent the planking on the outside, which will enable me to sand back the paint for my favoured well-worn look. I've added a metal (well, plastic) plate over the curved buffer, and nail gem rivets over the etched ones on the strapping overlays. I think I'll put it all together and paint it next (although possibly not in that order), then I need to think about adding brake gear. Here it is so far:

In the meantime, I thought I'd look in to see if any progress had been made on the Mystery Carriage. Unfortunately, the shed doors were closed, but these were propped outside:


They appear to be interior partitions, very much like those in the Gladstone Car, which is odd, because we've already got one of those... Hmmmm....

The mystery carriage: is it old F&WHR? Unless it's another Gladstone I cannot guess what other carriage has partitions like that from the NWNGR (the workman's and one corridor carriage didn't have doors)...
The only alternative is an FR van? Again they had mainly compartment stock.

Hi all,

A brief update on the FR coal wagon, a modified Phil Sharples kit. It's now in one piece, and the body is painted, including some tare weight markings - not great, but they'll be hidden by heavy weathering. In looking at reference photos I realised that in its current guise it only has four planks, unlike the six sported by the model. I was relieved to find another picture showing six planks earlier in the preservation era - who knows how many it had in the 20s???

The kit includes a false floor, so I've taken the opportunity to add some scraps of lead - it's nice and heavy now.


A good sanding will be next, then painting and adding the strapping, followed by weathering...
