Afternoon all,
After a hectic few weeks, a lovely relaxing Sunday morning seemed the perfect time to finish off the tippers with a little paint here and there where required.
This afternoon they had a very brief run up the garden, starting in the headshunt at Trefechan, the closest thing the (WH)WHR has to a quarry environment:
A trundle up the line followed, reaching about halfway up Penlan bank, where the track is too overgrown to continue...
I've got another three that will get the same treatment at some point, then perhaps I'll purchase another two so I can either run two rakes of 5 or a long rake of 10. For now, this little rake are just the thing to help out with the Spring repair programme...

That's a tricky one... It's named after my late mother-in-law, and was purchased with a bequest from her, so I feel a bit funny about attacking it with a palette of grot-coloured paint. I did choose the colour scheme thinking it would look like the diesels owned by the MOD which are/were kept pretty clean - I may tone it down a little at some point though. Alternatively, I've got an Andel Moelwyn which I'll weather at some point - I need to sort the batteries out first though, they gave up the ghost after a long period out of use when I was between railways...tom_tom_go wrote: ↑Sun Apr 07, 2019 2:57 pm

Hi Andrew,
They look really great. I love the loco too, it looks like a well cared for work horse, I like it just the way it is. The whole train together in the lovely setting of your line is a real inspiration.

They do look the part, nice and used. I'm sure some locos were looked after better than others even though they worked equally hard. No reason why this one has to be dirty.

That is one great looking train. The only thing that would improve it, in my eyes, is somebody in the cab to twiddle the knobs!
It makes me remember that I ought to do the same thing to my rake of skips, but tbh I've been to chicken to 'ruin' a perfectly good set of wagons, up till now.

Driver aside (as most of mine don't have one ) , those wagons look absolutely, totally amazing, well done

Glad you like the wagons, thank you!
Margaret does have a driver, somewhere, I'll have to try to dig him out from wherever he's hiding, and then perhaps attach him more permanently to the footplate!

Superb looking train - and thanks for describing your rust making process, I must have a go at the filings and vinegar technique, the results you've achieved are brilliant.

Hello all,
I've made a start on the next (WH)WHR rolling stock project, goods an number 2:
I'm currently without a closed van while WKLR van 11 awaits repairs to damage sustained through being stored in the tunnel, and anyway it's time I got back to building genuine NWNGR/WHR vehicles...
I've got no fewer than three drawings of this van, all different, but analysis of photos has resulted in a version I'm happy enough with. It's really quite a small vehicle, but that's because it's just a coal wagon with a few added planks and a corrugated iron roof...
Here are the basic bit, hacked rather badly out of 6mm ply:
These bits will just form a basic shell, with individual planks and other details added over the top.
Parts have started arriving for another vehicle to be built alongside this one - more on that in due course...

I like the 'barn door engineering' look of that wagon, particularly the roof.

This van and its sister, No.4, were pretty much cobbled together from bits and bobs. The doors on this one used the ironwork from the original doors of the coal wagon it started life as, and those on No 4 were curved - probably because they were pinched from a Ffestiniog flour van. I'll make a model of No 4 at some point too, but I thought No 2 would be a quicker job, with a better chance that the completed van might see service this summer.

No. 2 was believed to have started off as a "ridged-roof" wagon. These were used in passenger trains as a possible luggage van before the large Pickering's made an appearance. Both van 2 and 4 had doors on both sides, so don't forget the other door!

I quite fancy having a go atone of the ridge-roofed vans at some point too! And yep, was going to go for doors on both sides - I'm guessing you read the same WHR Heritage Group Journal that I did that debunks the "doors on one side" myth? Judging by the article in this one - https://www.welshhighlandheritage.co.uk ... -No-64.pdf - No 2 was built from a coal wagon though? The similarities in the shot of the van standing next to a coal wagon are striking... I really must get around to joining the Heritage Group...
