Clockwork and stored kinetic potential energy drives

Post by Dr. Bond of the DVLR » Sun Jul 19, 2009 9:24 pm

Has anyone considerd these - Clockwork and stored kinetic potential energy drives.
I dug out a toy I got for christmas that was a geared 'car' type thing that had a fly wheel. I beleive they are called friction drive cars and the model was called a 'zee car' I promptly set about reguaging the wheels and removing the tyres to see what I got. When I publish the movie I shall post it here.

Sounds intriguing, i know the Timpdon Lake Railway has a clockwork engine, but i've never seen it run.
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

This isn't proper clockwork as in wind up with a key! You have to get it going along the track and it keeps going for a very long time! I may use it for taking the token from one end of the line to another if there are any anomalies in running such as a loco making it to one end and running out of fuel!

I tried a mock up with a meccano clockwork motor and a mamod flat bed truck, but it didn't run for very far at all.

I might try a more serious attempt another day.

Inspiration here...
