Hi folks, whilst all the corona virus stuff is going on I’m thinking about projects to keep me going for a while, I’m thinking about building a small battery loco to haul a couple of wagons around my line comfortably, My budget is about 75gbp including shipping, hoping to get a steam outline loco but I will probably end buying another diesel, I’m thinking about building a IP Engineering Albert and painting it .

Hi there,
An alternative would be one of the Phil Sharples kits on eBay which are between £35-45:

Hi Mitch
Up to you, of course, but I built an IP Albert ......

..... and an HGLW LB1 at about the same time.

In my opinion, the HGLW loco has the edge. About the same price but I think the mech on the HGLW loco is more robust and you get 4wd with the Deluxe chassis all for around £35 in total (probably a bit more since I built mine). Not sure how much p&p is to Oz.
Rik
PS 4wd is essential if you want to pull a decent train

Not a cheap model but something different - Bowaters Models Freelance BEV for £75 including a chassis.

I powered mine with a single 18650 li ion cell, but I realise some people are not keen on li-ions. I later added another 18650 to power an Acme Engineering sound card, so two AA cells should fit easily.

More info on the soundcard here.

If you wanted to save cash and are happy to dabble with basic electronics, you could install an MP3 player module to play the sound of a diesel loco while it's running.
