Thanks for the credit on the rivets, Steve. As an avowed non rivet-counter, I never thought I'd be responsible for guiding someone else's rivet positioning. It's an honour ( I think). To be honest, I just figured that the rivets would coincide with brackets attached to the main frames. I like to keep things simple. ......

Also as a non rivet counter, I have no idea how many you had or better still, how many I drilled and installed. All I do know is I liked the look of yours and then worked out 5mm and 7mm fitted the buffer beams nicely for spacing, marked that out and started drilling, lol.

It's had a lick of etch primer and was put back together to show the father in law, so I thought I would grab a few pictures while I had the chance. I can only apologise for the bad lighting in all these pictures.

Managed to get a first cost of matt black on it today, , of course hung it on the line to dry

You should be justifiably proud of your achievement, it looks just great in primer and will be top of the class in black.

I managed to get the inside of the cab painted in half cream today, just something I like to do to all my loco's. Lots of detailing still required in there, then I can get the cab finally bolted together, some manual painting of rivets, dials, regulator and gauge glass and then start making it look mucky inside there. Still unsure on the weathering look to go for but I will be aging the brass as the chimney top and spectacles and not painting them, just think it looks better

Aging brass, there are a few methods I am aware of but the easiest and cheapest one that I use is simply expose them to vinegar fumes.

So, get a lidded large jar / plastic pot, put a "table" in it to put your items on (preferably something that won't float), then fill the jar with vinegar to just below your table height, put your things on the table, put the lid on and leave it over night (or longer if it has not yet achieved the age you are going for).

That's what I did last time and got pretty good results

A bit of spraying done on the false cylinders and a bit of hand painting done inside the cab. Quite honestly I wish I could paint as well as I seem to be able to work with plastic and metal, I can't help but feeling my painting skills (or lack thereof) are letting down the work I have done. A bit of repainting needed in places, but hey ho, Rome wasn't built in a day. Never been any good with a paint brush and to be fair, this is probably one of my better efforts, lol

A very good point, most people won't see it close up, in fact, the closest will be the pictures that end up going on here. As I said, the photo is actually being very very kind

Has Peter said Steve. Thats pretty dam good painting, but the only criticism you would probably get, would be from the "Rivet Counters" who have to go and spoil most things for everyone....


Would also like to see an example of the "blacking" process mate. I have left some chain in vinegar before and nothing much happened. Maybe I was doing it all wrong anyway....

The shelf was not on the cab sheet it was a shelf just over the firebox door and the warm steam oil and a billy each end fitted on it just.

Following on from the aging brass post and not feeling the need to explain that this particular Peckett was modified at some point in it's life to have a shelf for oily rags and sandwiches to be placed and it was welded to the front cab panel

Below are the pictures of the brass before hand and aged brass over about 20 hours. As always, real life looks better than pictures, but here they are.

Well, it's very much getting there now. The only things left to be done it the name plates glued in final place rather than blutac, and the dreaded weathering

I thought I would take some pictures of it as it is prior to me attempting to weather it, simply because it has great potential to go horribly wrong and look like a disaster afterwards, lol
