Darjeeling B class

Post by MAYBACH » Sun Oct 26, 2014 1:34 pm

Hi all
Looking at getting a Darj as my next project and giving it the works, details, repaint and weathering. Anybody got any nice shots of one on your line?
Not sure which way to go with it yet, blue is nice but then so is the green with original lower coal bunker and old style lamps. I see Matt Acton has just painted one in photographic grey too, no pics of it assembled yet though!

Also if anyone has one they might like to sell then get in touch! :-)

Cheers
Rob

I did this one a few years ago... http://www.rhoshelyg.me.uk/Gallery.html#TUSKER. Scroll down to see a few more.

Blue and green locos should have black boilers. Red locos should have a red boiler.

I love looking at all those shots Tony. The MSS Victor was a lovely colour scheme in creamy yellow. Half the fun is the muse on what colour, what loco, what's next.

The grey B class will be photographed in its assembled state in due time. For starters, it had to cross the Atlantic for reunion with the chassis. All will be revealed...

Thanks for the replies. I have looked at your stuff quite a bit Tony, some really nice work there.

I guessed the grey Darj was heading to the USA, it will be very interesting to see how it looks, I think it could be an inspired choice of livery! Keep us posted with some pictures when it's back together!

Nice to see your Darj Brian, I saw the write up in Garden rail. Good to see a loco with some weight behind it. Saw it at the Exeter show, along with some of the other nice ones, including the coal fired one that looked great with all the ash over it! :-)

Cheers
Rob

Oddly enough, though I know there's a school of thought that says "if you've got it, flaunt it" with regards to coal-fired locos, I don't like to see filthy coal-fired locos!

Trouble is I like my models to look real, I have never liked the super clean and shiny look of things, often how they look in preservation.

It is one of the things that draws me to the Darj, the general condition of the loco's :D

PS Nice user name by the way, being partial to a bit of MD650, MD655 or MD870 action myself.

Ha, well I am quite keen on Maybachs!!!! especially MD650's, I also work out in the States on the last Krauss maffei ML4000 with twin MD870's.
I remember you in the late 80's when I started working on the Westerns at Bridgenorth.

As the etched numbers imply, the grey model is representing 41B circa 1945. With the defrocking of Jervis Bay to revert to 28B in grey, 30B, 41B, and 47B were all repainted grey to haul the Mail comprised of Jimmy Shaw's new streamlined coaches.

As far as a reasonably accurate interpretation in concerned, 47B is off the table for conversion from Roundhouse' excellent model because of the different cab sheet profile. 41B became the logical choice for me since this was one of the 3 locos built in America in 1917. A friend and co-conspirator on the project will have 30B once a suitable candidate for conversion is acquired. This friend is also working on some suitable streamlined coaches to pull behind the grey B class.

Very interesting Paul, I still can't wait to see her assembled.

I have just picked up a Roundhouse Darj so it won't be long before I have it stripped and get on with the mods I have in mind. I'm still torn regarding livery but will have to make up my mind soon!

Cheers
Rob
