Accucraft Superior 'Bowatered'

Post by cncmodeller » Thu Sep 12, 2013 8:38 am

A couple of in progress shots of my Accucraft Superior which I am detailing as near as possible to how she looked in Bowater days, The loco has received a new cab front sheet to correctly position the cab front spectacle plates, Cab side sliding window rails and associated rivets, the dome housing painted black, I would love to shorten this but where do you get a shorter safety valve from? New riveted buffer beams and new paint job. Things still to do are the scale buffer/coupler housing, etched name and works plates and lining out.

Nice work so far! - in fact a huge leap from the more "generic look" of the as-supplied loco :D

Have you thought about shortening the SV rather than trying to find a replacement? Without looking at reference photo's to see how much you need to lose, it might well be possible.
Looking forward to further progress.

Good stuff.

Spray painting the smoke box and cab roof with heat resistant stove/BBQ paint will make a big difference to that loco :)

Great looking model! The additions really do enhance the looks. A Tom said I'd be tempted to go with a matte black on the cab roof and smoke box, this could be done using a matte lacquer though.

As for the safety valve how much shorter does it need to be?

Are there any other details your planning to add in the future?
If it can be made full scale it can be made 16mm

That looks great!

Did you mask and spray the black edging? Must do it to my RH Russell sometime but have been considering brush painting the edging...

Glad you haven't aded those huge couplings Bowaters used...

Cheers,

Andrew.

That is some very appropriate customisation.

Yes that is another job on the list, although I do plan to remake the smokebox as its incorrect dimensionally. The smokebox door is too large and the length of the smokebox itself is too short.

Yes I did mask and spray the black edging by cutting masking tape out on a Laser cutter, I did the yellow lining on the buffer the same way but it's not as good as a lining pen, so I'm going to Laser out thin Perspex templates that will be mounted off the green areas and this will act as a shoulder for the pen. I've done this before with triple lining and it works a treat.

Thanks for your kind comments, I think the safety valve needs to be half its height, which I'm not going to mess with due to safety concerns. I would like to add a spotlight on the smokebox which is more like a 1960/70's car fog lamp, Haven't found one yet so may CNC one up. I'm also after another Superior as I would like to Convert it to a Bagnall, as 'Alpha', 'Triumph' and 'Superb' were copies using the same Kerr Stuart design chassis but with Bagnall styled superstructure.

Wonder if a Joan boiler would be better off for doing a bagnall?

I thought that but the safety valve is still at the back on the Bagnalls and Joan's is in the dome.

Nice work! I use miniature pop valves made here in the U.S. by WeeBee Loco Parts. They are much smaller than Accucraft and Roundhouse valves and open and close with a snap. PM me for the maker's email address if interested.
