Roundhouse 2013
Hi all,
What does everyone think Roundhouse has been developing in the "Skunk-works" for this year?
Personally: since it's Prince and Princess' 150th birthday; it has to be one of those (my moneys on Prince because it is quite a bit larger then Princess and Palmerston since it was rebuilt in the 1970/80's).
Any other ideas?

As has been said many times by people I know, they could easily do that on a Bertie chassis. Although the rivet counters will pipe up that the whole ensemble will not look right...
However, given the recent swathe of FR releases by Roundhouse I'd have thought (or even hope!) they set their sights on something different.
I can't think of many big prototypes, although the recent article about Irish NG Modelling in SMT has reignited my affection for the Tralee & Dingle engines
Surely it's time they released another battery electric loco?

I would have thought that whatever RH produce it will need to be commercial?
With that yardstick they will look at the current economic climate and what people can afford, what they can build from existing parts and what loco's will be in the pubic eye over the next year.
1, The FR England's are beautiful engines that appeared in many guises over the years.
2, There are parts that could be used from previous builds (Taliesin - Cylinders & Valve Gear, Linda - Tender)
3, A tender loco would pump up the price, but we are only talking about a 0-4-0.
4, The England's are very much in the public gaze, much of RH publicity is already done...
5, the option of introducing the original square tank England should be very tempting?
6, I personally, can only operate small 0-4-0 engines. Many others are the same. Although the BIG loco's look stunning, there must be a limited market for them. However, everyone can find room for the "Grandfather" of the first narrow gauge steam engine???

An England's what I'm hoping for... Personally I'd be happy to see it use RH "Basic" kit to keep the costs down - it should fit, more-or-less. Even then I'll have to sell one of the children to pay for it...AFGadd:80887 wrote:I would have thought that whatever RH produce it will need to be commercial?

Good point re all the free publicity...
Fingers crossed!
Andrew.
Yes, it would still be quite an expense, and perhaps hard to justify in difficult times. I do have a lot of sympathy for young modellers starting out - I began in 16mm at 13 and for about 5 years my Mamod (purchased with the proceeds from a paperound) was my only steamer, eventually joined by an IP Jane. It's only relatively recently that I've managed to purchase more expensive locos, and that's partly because I purchased all my track etc years ago and scratchbuild most of my rolling stock.dougrail:80892 wrote:The only problem is, a tender alone from RH costs £175+ so would push a 'Bertie' [£575] + specialist body making, into the 800+ range. :/
New locos are now my biggest expense. Because I'm modelling a particular line though, the Welsh Highland, there is a theoretical upper limit on the motive power I "need" - I saved for an Accucraft Baldwin, managed to acquire "Russell" at a very advantageous price secondhand and so now require "Moel Tryfan" and an England to complete my line-up. My intention was to wait many years for both, partly because the only available models are at Roundhouse-plus prices - but if RH were to produce an England any time soon the temptation to flog the family silver and splash out would be very high!
Cheers,
Andrew
Yup, soon you will have to be the CFO of two Suisse banks to buy...dougrail:80892 wrote:The only problem is, a tender alone from RH costs £175+ so would push a 'Bertie' [£575] + specialist body making, into the 800+ range. :/

Personally I think it would be very interesting indeed if Roundhouse did a 16mm scale traction engine!
I realise this will never happen, because there wouldn't be the same degree of part commonality with other locomotives, and probably primarily because they wouldn't be interested in doing non-railway equipment, but for a model steam enthusiast, wouldn't a little Fowler with Roundhouse cylinders and boiler and valve-gear be stunning?
OK, I guess I'm a heretic. I realise this is a railway forum, but a guy can daydream. Maybe I'll do something similar myself one day with Roundhouse parts.
