Sm32.co.uk Fly Cranks required

Post by Jonnyb » Tue May 28, 2019 4:17 pm

Hi all

Haven’t been on here in ages, looking get back into the swing of 16mm and have a few projects in mind.

A while (quite a while now) there was a company with the above website that sold Merlin and roundhouse upgrades. They don’t seem to be around anymore but they used to sell fly cranks for roundhouse locos.

Does anyone know where I could get some or if someone can make them (happy to pay obvs)?

Can’t find any pictures which is annoying

Roundhouse fit FC to some of their locos, if you contact them I am sure they will sell them separately.

Mmmm... yes, they used to make some really, really nice replacement fly cranks for Linda, Blanche and Charles that looked just like the genuine Hunslet product. Lovely square edges, and counterbored at the back so that fitted over the axle bearing and so leaving no gap between the frames and the back of the crank.

Chuffed2Bits made an identical product but I guess the market evaporated when Roundhouse stopped making the locos. Last time I asked him MikeD at C2B had no plans to make any more.

They also used to make some that were like the rear ones of the Roundhouse Russell but for all the wheels, really wish I had some photos.

Surely they fit all axles?

i'm sure they would but they have a crank pin rather then being able to take the bolt/screw

There are three current, different and distinct types of Roundhouse fly crank:
- The normal "teardrop" shape used on most models.
- The "wedge" shaped ones used on the Darjeeling B-Class.
- The really big ones used on SR&RL No. 24.

They all have the same geometry, fit the same axles and take the same size crank pins, and so can be interchanged at will.

Early Russells had six teardrops but later ones have Darjeeling-style on the back axle only, in keeping with the full-size loco.
