Meths burner
This kind of burner arrangement could be used in a loco. Very quiet. Chicken feed tank not required. Adjustable flame. It would only flood if the fire went out. Most un-meths like to have a spill but no fire
Best wishes,
Dave

Re: Meths burner
Hi Dave,
It’s a good idea. For a pot boiler you probably need 65mm from the bottom of the burner to the boiler? If you use a fire box and tubes you need the complication of a blower.? Could prove more applicable to 7/8ths than 16mm?
Not trying to be negative, just trying to promote some discussion because it’s a subject I am interested in.

Re: Meths burner
Tim, Maybe I need to give it a go on my current loco build! I'll test the stove on the meths I've got in stock
Best wishes,
Dave

Re: Meths burner
Here's a video of it burning. Quieter than your average gas burner

The other problem may be that these are now colectors items with attendant price tag.

I'm mentioning using the technology, not cannibalising a priceless antique

Re: Meths burner
Hi Dave,
The modern Far East ‘Trangia style’ rip-offs are all wider than 70mm which may prove a challenge. Without a remote feed most of them hold appropriately 100ml of fuel which they claim to give 20 - 30 mins burning time.

Re: Meths burner
Hi Tim,
The burner head is considerably less than 70mm, it just needs pre-heating.
Fuel comes down the overhead vaporising tube and is regulated by a valve. To start, liquid fuel is passed from the valve outlet to the dish surrounding the burner, then the valve is closed. The liquid fuel is lit and this preheats the burner head and vaporising tube. The valve is then opened and gas is propelled into the burner as per the video. The burner keeps the vaporising tube hot
I think my large De Winton is an ideal candidate for this technology
