The Dreadnoughts set sail

Post by JMORG » Sat Jun 02, 2018 7:49 am

Hi guys,
Dad has FINALLY finished with his two test articles. You would've seen bits of these hidden behind our other projects. These prototypes are based on the original Morgan Talyllyn style Garratt "Dreadnought", differing with completely redesigned lasercut bogies and gear mountings.

These have been completely reconstructed following tests involving differing motors, boilers, gas tank locations and bogies. The lessons learnt from these models were integrated into the new "Baby" Garratts. They now feature Roundhouse boilers powering the SVS motor from Tony Green models.

Both of the Dreadnoughts are for sale. Unfortunately space is at a premium at the moment due to house sorting so these locomotives will need to move on to make room. Like the Baby Garratt, dad HOPES to make more Dreadnoughts in the future.

Beautiful models. And I love Garratts (it comes from spending two years of my childhood in East Africa).

I'd love to have a live steam Garratt on my little garden loop, although in "real life" it would be complete overkill. More prosaically there's no way I could spare the cash, and I don't have anything like the skill to produce one. Maybe one day one of those will change.

I presume the internal steam motor arrangement with dummy outside cylinders makes for a simpler (or more reliable) drive?

We will have a selection of the Baby Garratts soon ;)
Thanks for the compliments. They work using an oscillating motor in the boiler cradle powering the two bogies using cardan shafts. Essentially they are Heisler's mechanically. Allows scale speed over the roughest terrain with a decent load on as well.

Wink noted, but I think you've previously hinted at the Baby Garrratt price and it's well out of my range...!

Hi Dave,
Thank you very much. If you fancy coming to the LVLR; we meet every Wednesday evening at 6 and every first Sunday of the month. PM me if you're interested.
