Re: Wild Rose ~ Quarry Hunslet
My whistle could sound like a wet fart when running on steam!
Hopefully not though as the whistle design isfrom the original plans and there have been hundreds of this type built.

Re: Wild Rose ~ Quarry Hunslet
The next step was to make a Goodall valve, I had been borrowing one from the large De Winton. I took down the dimensions. I'm not using an o-ring.
I reused a boiler pressure test blanking off plug, drilled it through for 3/16" K&S brass rod and silver brazed it in.
Finished valve
Fitted

Great job on the Goodall valve Dave. It looks a big improvement on the original dare I say.
Have you tried your whistle yet mate....let's hear it please...

Re: Wild Rose ~ Quarry Hunslet
Great minds I think Tom
Here we go Rod
It wouldn't work on steam yesterday. So today I had a brainwave, try it on compressed air (car tyre) and at a low rate it sounded fine then and then rapidly blew out as the supply was opened up. Ah ha, I needed a restrictor. A piece of 1/16th tube was placed inside the whistle's 3/32" inlet tube and Hey Presto! It worked at all flow rates. The steam test has the restrictor fitted. The car tyre is at about boiler pressure - 30 psi, it just needs pumping up afterwards
Best wishes,
Dave

I think you've cracked it there, Dave. Sounds really good with that slightly breatheless effect. Well done.

Re: Wild Rose ~ Quarry Hunslet
Good work on the Goodall valve and the Whistle. More noise from less steam seems counter-intuitive clever of you to work that out.

Bang on Dave, I like how the whistle sound gradually changes when the condensate clears.

Re: Wild Rose ~ Quarry Hunslet
Thank you, lads.
A rolling road will be needed for the next round of testing. It was very pleasing, I had all the materials in stock. This spacing suits nearly all of my locos except the first one, and it fouls the meths tank a bit. I'm thinking of adding an extra set of holes for closer spacing for that loco.

Re: Wild Rose ~ Quarry Hunslet
Had a very nice test of Loco #1 on the rolling road today. It's been a while since this loco last ran

Love it Dave.
Could your whistle valve be connected to a servo?

Re: Wild Rose ~ Quarry Hunslet
It looks to me that the couplings rods are in sync with the cylinders sugesting you have not geared down from the oscilator. I have a binnie motor intended for a tram which came with a step down gear which was recommended for slow running. Yours seem to run nice an slow.
