Bogies

I need some advice please on some bogies. I have a railbus that will not run at all on my newly laid extension track, it wouldn't run on the old track either.... The trouble is I think, the bogies are too far forward and the whole body rolls all the time. I am thinking that the bogie needs to be moved back a fair bit, but the trouble is there is a battery box fixed under the body so I can only move it back to a certain point.
What I am really asking is, are there any bogies that have single axles or will I need to make my own. If I need to make my own what is the easiest why of doing it please.

Couple of photos of the wheels.

This is a little video of the extension. The tram is a little bit noisy, but hopefully she will get quieter with some dry grease on the drive.... She is also pulling the coach that wouldn't run on the old track..

Loosen the bogie mounting screw so the bogie can tilt fore and aft and rock side to side, as well as rotate freely.

Since the rear driving axle is presumably fixed in position, that will give you 3 point suspension and make the model less sensitive to the track. You may have to experiment a bit to work out how much freedom the bogie needs on this track.

Same with bogie coaches (and bogie wagons), one bogie needs side bearers to stop it rocking, but still be free to tilt back and forward. The other one needs to be free to both rock and tilt, again to give a 3 point suspension.

The bogie wheelbase looks short, so unless your tracklaying is really bad, you shouldn't need to fit a bogie with compensated sideframes.

Have fun..... ;)

Graeme

Thanks Graeme. Did you look at the tram video, it shows it running with a coach that would not run at all on the old track. It does now, so I think the track is fairly well laid if I say so myself....

I don't doubt that, but we live in a universe where entropy increases.... The odds are the track will move over time.

Mine is partly built on fill and I'm already seeing slight gradients that weren't there when I built it......

Which is why the supports are designed to be easily adjustable.

The coach may be OK now on good track, but it would still be worth sorting it out, so you can run it on other tracks that aren't as well laid as yours.

Graeme

I do see what you are saying Graeme and your are correct in that track will over time move, I am hoping that mine will not, he says with some anticipation......

Rod,
This looks like a Brandbright railcar?
If so, I had one for a while, and it displayed all the troubles you mention.
The problem is, it's simply too long for our typically sharp curves.

I moved the battery box further back, and then refitted the bogie pivot under the front bulkhead.

It still wasn't enough, so it was sold on.

Mmmmm you are spot on Rob, it is the very same Railcar....The quandary is, do I attempt to try and do the same, with perhaps moving the bogies even further back, or do I sale it on like you did, and how much should I sale it for....decisions, decisions.....Is it worth the aggro.....

PS Rob, did yours have larger wheels on the drive like mine and would that make it do what it does ?

Yes, Rod,
Pretty much the same. Of course, it was some years back.
Bought it in 2003 & finally sold it about 2010.
I seem to remember it was reasonably stable, just ground to a halt on my curves.

I felt it would benefit from a 4w power bogie at the rear, but couldn't locate anything suitable.
Just wondering perhaps a Lima 0 gauge bogie, with false side frames might do the trick.
They occasionally come up on that well known auction site.

Thanks Rob... :thumbright:

I will stick with it then and see how it goes, I am one for not giving up on something and if I can get it to work well all well and good, but if not.....

Hi Rod, I have just checked out that link to bogies and those are not the ones you need. What is suggested by Rob is an '0' gauge power bogie (4 wheel drive with motor unit attached) made by LIMA. These are now no longer made and highly sought after, so can be expensive. You might be lucky enough to find a complete diesel loco for sale which uses these but you will have to be prepared to spend some serious cash.
If you can find one which doesn't work electrically but the gears are still good, you can get replacement motors which are easy to fit, and alter to battery power instead of track power.

Sorry, a bit slow chipping in, been busy in the works.
Yes, Peter, that's correct.
I'm wondering now if something from IP Eng. may be adaptable.

What about these ?

Or something similar...

Sorry Rod, No, it needs a motorised bogie.

This sort of thing MAY be adaptable:-

Can you please explain to this uneducated mind.....

I don't understand why it's needs to be a motorised bogie. Have I to replace the drive at the rear, or is it to put on the front bogies with it driven by the same batteries that are powering the rear wheels.....It's stupid I know.....

Sorry Rod,

My theory is to leave the front bogie as is.
Replace the rear, fixed, single axle drive with a swivelling 4w motor bogie.

This ought to make it comfortable on curves, like a bogie coach, (or Fairlie loco).
It is a bit radical, but I can't see a better way to do it.

I see now Rob. Thanks. :thumbright: :thumbright:

I will have a look at doing something with the back fixed drive.

I have been searching for a Lima motor bogie myself and found nothing available, so I thought laterally (as I usually do) and came up with an alternative. I must admit this is experimental and not the easiest of conversions to make, but it looks OK and should be up to the job...... what is it.....

A LEGO power bogie.... 9v and built to be child-resistant.... if that is possible?

After some surgery I have managed to reduce the width, replace the wheels and re-build the casing.....

These do come up for sale and are considerably cheaper than the Lima ones.

Not to every-ones liking, but I'm sure I can make use of it.

Wow Peter, that's fantastic...... :thumbright: :thumbright:

It also looks like a Lego bogie with those dimples on it. Looks like I will need to be looking for one just like yours then.... :thumbright:.

Opppps, my flipping eyesight is going to.....

Thats what you get for not fully reading posts.....

Just had look on Ebay Peter, would this be similar to the one you bought and could it be used on the railcar....
