Any ideas re the origin of this?

Hope no one minds if I ask this here. Beside the Ffestiniog example where a back-to-back bench was placed lengthways and on pleasure/private estate lines etc is anyone aware of a single compartment workman's coach existing on any of Britain's former narrow gauge railways? On the edge of a lone Railway Series illustration set in 1867 two of the Skarloey Railway's six quarryman's coaches are seen but I had thought the low capacity design to be fanciful and only drawn that way due to compression from the small book format.

The Penrhyn and Dynorwic systems may have used something similar. However I would hazard a guess that there was a desire to cram as many men as possible onto each wagon so possibly twin compartment stock was preferred. The biggest expense of a wagon being the iron work (wheels etc) it may have been almost as cheap to built a twin rather than a single.

Yeah the Ffestiniog's old two compartment types are the smallest day to day design i'm aware of.

Given the lack of bang for buck on the single compartment layout I thought it was fanciful but i'm only really versed with the TR, FR, the Corris and the the R&ER. If no one here knows of any i'll happily settle for a two compartment design but thanks for Dynowic pointer, these are unbelievably cute
