Not had my loco long enough for it to need doing, and as I use pure filtered rain water I hope I won't have to for a fair while. However, that aside, I know Mamod recommend hot water and lemon juice. Whether it works or not who knows....
What's this button do then? ooops.....

I used the gauge glass on my uncles' Taliesin as a guide, once it is starting to gain deposits then it is time to washout the fleet in turn. I tend to use watered down white wine vinegar, although I have used it neat if I think the scaling is bad. I also gently agitate the loco to slosh around what is in there before draining it out. Finish off by flushing the boiler out 2 or 3 times with fresh water.
"What the hell is that?"
"It's a model icebreaker sir."
"It's a bit big isn't it?"
"It's a full scale model sir....."

That is why I asked as this was happening to one of my locos.

I used kettle descaler in the end and it's worked very well.
