More coal

Post by DKLR » Sat Mar 14, 2015 5:12 pm

After a Time and Motion Study, it was revealed that the D&KLR's Bertie class 0-4-0ST 'Violet' was stopping too frequently to top up with coal on the long haul from Dunkitt to the Knibble mines. So after a board meeting it was decided that the engine needed a larger coal bunker. This task was given to the apprentices at the Teapot Lane Workshops.

(Reality - I wanted to r/c the steam whistle but there wasn't enough room in the cab for a servo so I mounted it on the outside of the back of the cab and built a coal bunker to cover it).

(Sorry don't seem to have got the picture sorted.)

Ha! Ha! Sorted the piccie. This is Bill posing with his engine with the coal bunker fitted. He'd very pleased as he wont have to make so many stops.

Real coal in bunkers always looks better than white metal or resin casts, well done.

Took some photos and a bit of vid yesterday, but not a patch on yours, I've just watched your YouTube runs, embarrassed now.

I've found the photos I took when I started this project.

Manufacturing the coal bunker in tin plate. brackets and support were made from brass angle, 6BA nuts were soldered on to make fixing easy.

The way Roundhouse fix their bunkers is to extend the side plates so they can be held in place by the rear cab step hand rails.

I bolted this bunker to the cab back plate then elongated the holes in the cab back so that it slides into the rear cab step handrails. Then all I have to do is pinch up the nuts and connect the chain to the whistle.
