Dibden Valley Railway Projects

Post by cjallenby » Wed Nov 12, 2014 6:46 am

Well hello again. Ive been rather busy of late and not posted on here, but here are some happenings going on down at the Dibden Valley Railway (Not to be confused with the Deben Valley Light Railway)

First up after a large number of derailments, a complete relay has become necessary, although this has recently slowed down due to work and the on set of winter weather. This involves placing some free external plywood battens on the existing base of mainly paving slabs and bringing up to height with concrete to create a much smoother track bed. Anew avoiding line has been put in so as not to use the full circuit and wires to boost the electric supply at strategic intervals have been laid underneath.

The smokebox door is made from a mini spice jar lid, with a radio control boss from the bits box, brass strip and coathanger wire. The safety valve with more of those bosses, coathanger wire, a spring from a pen and some plasticard off cuts for the top.

The steam dome is from a womens deoderant bottle.

As well as all this, Merlin Mayflower No2 River Itchen is to receive new hunslet style buffer beams, there is a Y6 tram loco to complete, a Faller Railcar to be upgauged and modified and another live steam loco to be constructed... Watch this space!

Good to see things developing on this DVLR after a year or 3 without updates.

I think you'll find this one is the DVR laal!

Good to hear from you, that relay looks a bit serious - have you used the same system for the whole of the railway or just the worst bits?

Yes, the relay is very serious, but its been needed. Almost all the railway will eventually have this method. The weather hasn't been very kind, though I hope to finish the shorter original layout first, with the rest for next year.

As for the other projects, the steam loco has stalled due to the unsuitablility of parts that were in stock. There will be more on this when this gets going. The GVT tram is awaiting a final details and painting. Anyone know where I can get a suitable chimney for it?

As for the Y6... Construction has commenced, based around a playmobil motor block (same as the GVT) but with a playmobil diesel chassis as well. The body will need tidying up later on. The cow catcher is made from coat hanger wire suplerglued together.

Also on the cards is the Faller rail bus, for which a suitable 45mm motor block has now been found, but yet to arrive. This model will have new doors to the original as one side are sadly missing.

I thought you'd already built a Y6 or is my memory failing me?

No, your memory is not failing you, but the loco in question was built for a friend and also forum member George. So I am building one, which will be much improved for my self. The steam loco will be a Willesco Meccano, thing and I have already made the chassis using Accucraft 32mm wheels, refitted to Meccano axles and gauged accordingly. Unfortunately the free Willesco stationary engine has proved to be too big and with the cylinder flywheel arrangement not fitted to the top of the boiler, unusable. A new one will be on the cards, if I don't have to spend too much on the other projects!

Excellant my kind of scratch building.

I think the GVR loco is GREAT! and the cow catcher...your cheating like me...we should solder not glue

Its hard sometimes to keep things on the boil..try simmering for a while...you still make progress...its not a race...its a past time and fun...hope to see more soon.

I did try soldering it before, but it was very awkward. Don't think coat hanger wire is meant to be soldered!

Buffer beam is painted and more progress if only slight on the GVT tram loco. This is to be named 'Sir Albert', after my grandad who I never met.

Great stuff. Really like your imaginative use of 'found' materials.

I like the bufferbeam, nice to see somebody doing something so different on what many would consider a "heritage" engine.

The tram is looking rather good. I am glad to see I am not the only one who looks out for odd lid and caps etc that might come in handy.

Coincidentally, I posted something on by blog on 17th Jan about that subject - http://riksrailway.blogspot.co.uk/2015/ ... uilds.html

I'm sure I've only just scratched the surface of what can be used when modelling - I think I'll start a new thread so see what else others have used.
