jackson Sharp > Leek & Manifold coach bash

Still very much work in progress, but thought I'd show you where I'm up to with my current project. Bashing three Bachmann Jackson Sharp coaches into something vaguely resembling the Leek & Manifold coaches.

OK - at the mo, it still betrays its origins but hopefully, when I thicken the frames and add the railings, it'll look a bit more L&M-ish.

Like all my builds, they are 'inspired' by the originals rather than faithful scale models. My apologies to the purists.

I like the look of that very much! The open top lights are a nice touch and the slope of the roof makes them stand out from the norm.
It looks like a 'stained glass' effect in the windows, how is that done?

The stained glass is nothing more elaborate than permanent marker pen. It's a simplification of the original - I try to avoid complications. Unfortunately the black pen I used is a but too thick. I'm hoping to track down a finer one when I do the other side (and the other coaches).

Thought I'd see how she looked with deepened frames and balcony rails (thanks Peter for the idea of using dolls' house railing).

I'm not too sure about the depth of the underframe. It is scale depth in relation to the height of the sides but looks a bit chunky to me. Maybe that's because the coach is under scale length.

Anyway, still a few more details to add - roof supports, rivet detail, battening to the sides (maybe) and then of course comes the interior. Already bought some of those battery powered warm white Christmas lights ....... :)

I much prefer it with the deepened frames, the high riding appearance was too USA for me!
I'm glad you like the railings too. Much more in keeping with the period I think.
All three together will be nice looking train, keep posting developments on the interior as well.

What a smashing bash! Reminds me quite a bit of the southwold carriages too, especially in that livery.

That really is superb Rik. I have to agree with Peter, the toplight windows are very good indeed. They really make the coach. I also agree with Peter about the underframes, they look absolutely right to me. I look forward to seeing more.

I agree, you have a nice looking coach there. Looking forwards to seeing a complete rake.

A little more progress on this. I've added rivet detail to the underframes and added more depth to the balconies. I've now fixed the railings in place (tricky as they are oily plastic). I've yet to add the interior but I thought I'd do that for all the coaches when they're finished.

I'm keeping the LGB couplings for now. I know they look awful but I do enjoy shunting and so I can live with the compromise. I'll add some cosmetic choppers and a few more rivets to the buffer beams though.

Now working on bashing the next two coaches. The one at the back of the photo will be a brake end which is why two of the windows are blanked out.

Hope to make a lot more progress over the Christmas break (family permitting). Hopefully, the next two will be quicker to build now I've learned what to do with the first one.

Top marks for that build.... you have made a superb job of it!
The extra rivet detail is just right too.
All three together will be a wonderful sight.

I have to agree with Peter, the rivet detail, although quite subtle, is absolutely spot on and really makes it for me. Well done! :D

It's taken a while, but I'm beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel for the remaining two coach bashes.

Just a reminder - this is the more or less finished open coach (as detailed above) ......

Still needs its interior fitted-out which is why they roof isn't yet glued into place.

Here's where I'm up to with its sister coach.

The underframe still needs to be completed (and painted) and an interior fitted - hence the roof is not yet fixed down

And here's where I'm up to with the brake end

As you can see, the guard's/luggage compartment needs glazing and it needs its underframe and interior completing.

And here's what they look like as a rake

They're by no means perfect - but they do have an air of Leek & Manifold about them. And what is more, I know they will negotiate the tight curves on my railway.

They do look good together. Well worth the effort for a unique rake (for now!) but I bet someone else will follow your lead before long as they lend themselves to modifying so well.

I hadn't thought of lining them. I've only ever used Trimline tape for lining and it's OK but not brilliant. I'm not really confident enough to use a bow pen.

Lovely stuff, they look great together. Although, that said, I liked the light railway mix'n'match look of the first L&M carriage and a conventional compartment coach ion your recent snowy video too. Looking forward to film footage of this lot in action...

Yes, me too. Looks like snow is forecast tonight, though it could turn to sleet very quickly. I'd like to get some more snowy pictures and video if I can and if I crack on with the build I might have them ready for tomorrow. But then, my builds always seem to take longer than I anticipate. Sometimes I know I over-complicate things. I keep forgetting the KISS principle.
