How to align the crankshafts?

Post by mymodeltrain » Sat Mar 19, 2022 7:23 pm

This is the first time I learn how to assemble a PDF Quarry Hunslet locomotive. I always have a problem, not only this model but every steam locomotive when it comes to assembling the crankshaft. For the PDF model, we have to tighten the cranks to the axel of the wheels first before aligning the shaft. My question is whether the cranks within an axel should be aligned 90 degrees to each other, other they should be in the same direction? If someone has a photo of how to do this please share the information. Thanks.

A lot of people have trouble at this stage of the PDF kits, myself included. Yes, the cranks must be 90 degrees offset from one another. British convention is to have the Right-Hand crank 90 degrees ahead of the Left-Hand one.

Reading the instructions at that point on the Hunslet really is painful. https://www.pdf-models.co.uk/_files/ugd ... bb3627.pdf

Your best bet would be a simple jig, to get the quartering right. I made one for my Baldwin, you'll find it near the bottom of the page: https://gardenrails.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=12849
