Model railway progress.

Post by Tony Bird » Sat Jun 13, 2020 11:47 am

Hi,

Yesterday I finished the last of the track work by making and fitting the moving centre part of the last two points. The photographs show the start of day, during the day and end of day. My wife finished ballasting the last but two of the base boards. The photographs show the ballast applied and after tipping to remove the excess ballast.

I have to say it is good to have finished the track laying it was getting a bit repetitive. One of the criterion set when designing the layout along with being able to fit it in the trailer was weight. Now the baseboards have track and are ballasted it is possible weigh them. Assuming the sums are correct the 18 base boards have a total weight of 82 kg say 180 lb, the heaviest single or pair of hinged boards being 6 kg say 13.5 lb which is well within my present lifting capacity.

Where from now? Really the layout should be set up in its entirety and trains run to show up areas that might need tweaking. This not possible at the present time so a bit of a break from layout building before starting on some scenery I think.

Take care stay safe.

Tony.

Hi Jim,

The granite ballast was bought from a model shop; the brand name is Javis who make products used for model scenery. Paint more or less the same colour as the ballast was used to glue it in place.

Take care Tony.
