Re: A Garage For FWLR
A smoke generator in the chimney for the wood burner would be very atmospheric blowing into the cold air with those lights on.

Great idea!tom_tom_go wrote: βSat Jan 19, 2019 12:56 pm A smoke generator in the chimney for the wood burner would be very atmospheric blowing into the cold air with those lights on.

Re: A Garage For FWLR
If you do want to fit one Rod get one that is for model building use as if you fit one that is intended for a locomotive it will pump out too much smoke and look like the wood burner is being used to burn illegal documents!
Re: A Garage For FWLR
Great idea Tom, never thought about that. I am going to build a brick chimney at the back of the office, so I will need to find a cheap smoke generator so I can get some dimensions and work it in.

Those of you with a busy lineside streetscape could add one of these, flashing light and all...
(There's a whole subculture of this stuff, a lot of it very well done)
Re: A Garage For FWLR
Thanks Andrew. It took a bit of work getting the wiring sorted, getting better at soldering in tight places....
Enlighten me please on Edward Hopper....

Re: A Garage For FWLR
I shall be adding one of those. I'm tempted by the Pendle Valley one, with optional flashing unit.
I'm not planning a busy streetscape, but I don't think that's necessary. It'll fit in anywhere in time and space.
Re: A Garage For FWLR
EH was an American painter in the first half of the 20th Century, lots of isolated figures looking lost and lonely in big cities etc - see https://www.edwardhopper.net/
The atmospheric pools of light you've created in your garage, and your little chap working on his own in the office made me think of his work - here's another favourite:
The female figures in his paintings were always modelled by his wife, incidentally...
Cheers,
Andrew.
Re: A Garage For FWLR
Thank you Andrew. I like the way he uses light at different times of the day to show how it gives atmosphere to his painting. Also they are giving us an insight into how we live day by day, although the pace of life was slower in his day, I guess anyone who was to try and paint the same way now, would show us a different pace in how we live.
I like these, although there are some brilliant paintings and I don't want to turn this into an art thread. Maybe start another thread in "Off Topic".
I am not an art critic by the way.. I do like to see great paintings though.

Re: A Garage For FWLR
It's been sometime since I updated my thread because of things happing with me. I won't bore you with the why's. Most members know anyway.
Since doing the office, I started on the chimney. I wanted to make it out of real bricks, so I made a start, please bare in mind I never could lay bricks and the following photos will attain the way it looks like a dogs hind leg.
This is the smoke generator I used, I think it does a good job. You will notice that I also put the roof on the office. The clear corrugated sheet was also acquired from Bole Laser Craft.
I said I wasn't a brickie....
Next was putting some guttering and downpipes on. Looking online I thought even though what I found available are extremely good. I thought because of the length of my garage it would be expensive. Funds and all that...
I started with some 5mm plastic pipe and I made a jig for them and cut in the middle of it, putting a steel ruler there to make sure they were cut fairly straight....
Anyway I won't bore you with how I made the downpipes with photos, but it was just simply putting some bigger bore pipe over the intended downpipes.

Re: A Garage For FWLR
1/2 round styrene extrusions are available in a number of sizes and 330mm and 1000mm lengths, at a pretty reasonable price, and its a lot easier than cutting tube (with less wastage if you are anything like me!)FWLR wrote: βSun Apr 07, 2019 9:55 am

Re: A Garage For FWLR
I really like your chimney Rod, it has the appearance of age and many repairs during its years of work. Plastic tube and rod (of the plastic kind) are available in assorted sizes and large packs from China at very reasonable prices. They are useful for so many things once you have them. I have used the same process as you on my structures, cutting the tube in half in a band-saw.... possibly less hazardous than a sharp blade on a smooth surface?
The best things in life are free.... so why am I doing this?
Re: A Garage For FWLR
Ingenious way of making guttering, Rod. And that chimney looks brilliant. It's going to make a mighty fine model when it all comes together.

I love the brickwork, it looks fantastic! Might have to give that a try sometime...The finished garage is going to look great.
Cheers,
Andrew.

Re: A Garage For FWLR
Sorry about not finishing the update, I got rather tired yesterday putting those photos up and writing a bit how I did things. So onwards and upwards....
The guttering and downpipes are now on. I also made a water barrel out of HIP.
This photo is of two I made and compared it against shop bought. I used the middle one, because I thought it looked right. I am not into scale really. I think if it looks right, it is.
And Anne is my inspector, So if she says it looks good, that's good enough for me.
The finished water barrel.
The garage has a multi fuel stove, so I also made a wood store. I am sorry I didn't take photos of the build, but it was pretty straight forward. Open brick store with the logs cut from twigs I had and the cover was made with HIP and the corrugated sheet.
The crack you can see was not intentional, while I was lifting it up after laying down to tidy up the base, it broke, so I had to re-grout it. Didn't realise there was a crack until I put it on the forum.........
I will put some more on the build later, I just need a little rest..

Re: A Garage For FWLR
That really is looking good Rod. As Tom says, leave the crack alone, that is exactly what old brickwork does.
I also like the line of green along the bottom, again exactly what you'd see on an old building.

Re: A Garage For FWLR
Few more photos of the garage,
Son-in-law wrote the sign I made. Also got the iron work on the doors.
Thought I would show Andrew this one....
Nearly finished with some extras put in...
All painted and some weathering....
The black bin is for the lights in the garage, they are LED strips I bought of eBay. They came in varying amounts on each roll. And for just over Β£1, I got 60 on the roll, so they will last me longer than my life time.....
They did however take a few weeks to arrive....

I have bought some door hinges for the office door and just waiting for them to arrive today hopefully. Then it's on with something Anne wanted me to do on it. Will reveal when I start to do it after our holiday next week....
