Vertical Traverser / Hoist System

I hope the title explains it a little bit.

I am wondering if anyone has see / had any experience of / perhaps even built such a thing as a vertical traverser system.

I have room for 3-4 lines in my storage yard and was hoping to increase this to 9-12 using a system of three moving platforms.

I envisage the final thing looking something like a set of three shelves moving up and down.

Electrically powered ideally with the ability for it to sense and 'goto' one of the three levels (i can take care of the control electronics as these already exist for the smaller indoor gauges)

Something like 35 years ago, on an exhibition layout, I built an inclined traverser to take a short train from high to low level. This was just for fun on an Emett style layout but it did work operated by a Mecano motor and chain link drive onto a shaft with sprockets. It ran on two parallel rails and lined up accurately with the upper and lower tracks, working well even under exhibition conditions.
I doubt it will help you at all but just thought I'd let you know it should be possible for you to do such a thing.

Like Peter, I built a traverser in 4mm scale many years ago using just 4 tracks on the moving portion.

It wasn't computer controlled just using logic chips. It had 4 pushbuttons on a control panel and pushing one of the buttons moved the traverser to the corresponding track number for loading/unloading.

Were you looking for something as complex as the Youtube clip?

Vertical movement was the main issue, there is plenty of space vertically but i'm limited to about 4 tracks wide max.

Originally i was looking to move the entire 4 track yard up and down but it may be possible to just move one track up and then reverse off into storage at various levels

That sounds do-able using vertical movement instead of horizontal.

Given a completely free hand, what would be your ideal number of vertical stages to move through?

Would you need horizontal movement as well as vertical movement?

I'd been thinking of something similar for my garage. But just a single elevator to take one siding up to bench level so I could run trains in the garage over winter without having to bend down to knee-level.

Yes, more like the construction of the first link with the control of the second link.

Groundworks currently underway for a door in the back of the garage and a split patio area with track running through the middle - then to refit the garage and then hopefully onto this!
