Re: Couplings

I had a friend who designed and made his own couplings for OO gauge rolling stock. It was very similar to the LGB style, which to me resembles an inverted Hornby style one. It was adapted with some sort of magnetic counter balance which gave some form of automatic coupling and uncoupling. Being made...

Re: Couplings

Rik,

That's a potential can of worms you've opened. :bom: My friend with a OO layout is going through exactly the same issue. Presently his trains operate with 4 or 5 different types of couplings and the jury's still out.

I shall watch with interest!

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales

One of the biggest problems with the larger scales, like 16 mm, is trying to convey the feel of their appeal in the garden environment in a show setting. Smaller scales can be built into compact, detailed and prototypical portable senic layouts that tell a story with reletive ease. If there were a ...

Re: It never occurred to me to create a YouTube account!

Yes, If Derek asks for volunteers I'll be there. It's in my diary 20th May. There's a MWLAG meeting on 17th, but I doubt I'll make that one.

Re: Cost of OO against 16mm

I agree with all that's been said here up to now. I still do a bit of 4mm. Mainly commissions. Sometimes small projects that take my fancy. Although steam is my main interest I have some class 86's and a 90 to detail and repaint. I no longer plan on a 4mm scale layout as I once did. Most of us proba...

Re: It never occurred to me to create a YouTube account!

Thanks Rod,

I may give it a go this evening and post a brief video of my LadyAnne on Derek's portable Kingsdown Road Layout.

Re: Paint Colours

While I was doing some figure painting I wanted some flesh colour paint and I was told that, Humbrol 12ml Acrylic Paint No. 61 Flesh Matt would be ok. But having bought one it was a lot more pink than I expected. So I looked on line and ended up with this instead. Humbrol 14ml No. 1 Tinlet Enamel P...

That makes it even more impressive. Something I could never do and certainly worth admiring.

Phoenix looks familiar?

A YouTube account? Something else to look into. I have a small video but don't know how to get it off my phone or post it!

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales

That Meccano locomotive is a work of art, I'd have stopped for a good look at it too. It's very impressive. I've looked at allsorts at model railway shows, from 009n to gauge 1 and early steam to modern traction. Most of which I don't model or get involved with but I can learn or draw inspiration fr...

A sliding door would work too. Once mother nature does her worst/best it'll look great.

Lovgely video and great little loco.

For me this is a lot of what narrow gauge in the garden is all about. A HGLW loco is on my wants list.

Closest I can think of is S Guage or 3/16ths. Track is 22.5mm. I'm not aware of any manufacturers though.

Re: Volunteering

Ian, I think you are right with this. A good way to do it is to turn up and make a nuisance of yourself until someone gives you a job to do. Both Jim's are spot on. One of the problems is that there is a bit of a history of 'five minute' wonders coming along, taking up peoples time in getting them ...

Re: Vale of Fairway

Well my 4mm holiday is almost over with Thornbury this weekend. I blame the John Vaughan China clay spread of wagons that gave me smaller urges. Bit resin still to use up but now slipping back into garden mode. If I'm going to get the slate cutter out to add some roof weight I am going to make it w...

Re: 16mm and its relationship with other scales

In all hobbies/interests/groups you always get those that want to decry other interests or efforts and claim theirs as superior. We model and build what we like, because of our own reasons. I come across this all the time at the East Lancashire Railway. Steam v diesel, GWR v LNER etc. Mostly good it...
