Re: A brewery for Beeston Castle

That is a magnificent building, so realistic and is going to fit into your railway in a very convincing way. I'm not quite sure what you mean by taking a long time, certainly beats any of my projects on timescale and everything thing else for that matter. My only concern is that you must be running ...

Re: Garden Rail Magazine

I think you chaps are quite fortunate receiving the mag this early, I realise that you must be subscribers and should enjoy the early privileges but my gripe is that I have a digital subscription and for some months now this has not been available until the planned publication date. In fact last mon...

Re: NEW FWLR LINE

Depending on your point of view pollarding can be quite appealing where there is plenty of space but in a small garden a bit of a nightmare. I had a very similar situation to Rod about 15 years ago in my garden where the willow was reduced to around 10' tall, the resulting growth the following year ...

Re: Roundhouse Lady Anne Regner whistle fitting

Just as a point of interest, did wrapping the steam pipe in string (?) make any noticeable difference to any condensate issues?

Re: Roundhouse Lady Anne Regner whistle fitting

Thanks Rod, it does sound quite loud when used indoors but far more realistic when in use outside. The Regner whistle I find sounds pretty good and lifelike not like some whistles that I have heard that sound more like a strangled canary ;)

Re: Roundhouse Lady Anne Regner whistle fitting

Tom, this is a video clip of the Regner whistle that I fitted to my Ragleth a couple of years back. https://youtu.be/wCDstuDEovY As you can see there is no real problem with condensate in the steam pipe, the only thing that I did was to mount the whistle horizontally under the running board with the...

Re: Multiple small projects

I'm very envious of your figure painting skills, your eye sight and steady hands are clearly a lot better than mine. I particularly like the pullover that the gentleman on the carriage roof is wearing, that must have been quite difficult. I'm afraid if I had painted that it would have been a simple ...

Re: Roundhouse Lady Anne Regner whistle fitting

Tom, a bit late with this post as I can see you are beginning to master the art of silver soldering but your first photo shows the classic symptoms of insufficient heat. The flux can be seen to have only partially melted, it should bubble and boil to look like water around the joint and at that poin...

Re: What to do with a couple of chassis

I know what you mean here, when I built my GRS Pecket loco, the chassis was supplied with a MFA motor and gearbox with a 15:1 ratio. Worked beautifully apart from running around like a scalded cat, so it didn't take me long to change the gearbox for a 30:1 ratio. Now looks so much more realistic and...

Re: FWLR Water Tower

If you want some real rust just let it weather outside for a few weeks, the chain will soon rust. In my case I had to replace the supplied chain with some brass (not brass plated) within a year. Not sure what the chain composition is but it's a long time since I've seen steel rust quite as quickly.

Rod, not sure if the above link has worked but if it has it shows the corrugator that I referred to yesterday.

Re: A Garage For FWLR

I've just found a couple of YouTube videos on making your own corrugated sheet material using aluminium takeaway food containers, not being computer savvy I don't know how to add a link but all I did was enter "scale corrugated sheet" on Google and that brought up a number of useful sites ...

Interesting technique you have developed there, I quite like the look of it. I'm always on the the lookout for something different and one of my winter projects this year is a station building for my railway extension so this has given me some food for thought. Have you used this method before? I'm ...

Re: Early retirement

I wouldn't be too hopeful of having lots of extra time available, when I first retired I found that I appeared to have even less hobby time than when I was working! After 8 years of retirement things have now settled down to a comfortable balance but when I look back I still find it hard to understa...

Re: Flexible track

When I first made my rail bender I was amazed at how much force was required to bend the rail and in fact my initial device did not work. When you think how relatively easy it is to bend the rail around your knee for example but of course there is a fair amount of leverage available when doing it li...

I don't know about it starting in June but I remember doing a Rhine cruise many years ago and the boat moored up for a visit where they had a "Christmas Shop" that was open all the year round! I can't remember the name of the town where it was located but it's quite well known and I sure s...

In my local group there are two members who have purchased Boltons since they have become available and both are run on our portable track which is laid with Peco track which is I believe is code 250. A very nice loco at a very attractive price and I have been seriously considering one to add to my ...

Re: sound cards

Was it "Master Blaster" by any chance? They do a good range of station and countryside sounds, I have one from there that creates a superb sound of a stationary steam engine which I use in my steam pump house.
