What you are suggesting sounds fine to me. If you haven't already seen Rik's "Peckforton" you really should take a look at his many threads on here and/or the Blog itself.

All sounds very reasonable. Using stakes and marking the level between each one sounds good, although I'd use a felt tip marker rather than spray paint. To add a volume control, you could add a 100 ohm pot across the speaker output, and the speaker connected between the wiper (centre-connection) and the 'ground' end of the pot. Thanks Phil.
