You could also use a hydraulic drive. It would not be that hard to make. Simply use a syringe operated by a modified servo to push or pull oil into the hydraulic coupling.

For the money you really can't go wrong with a loco kit from HGLW.

More about revs I reckon. A 4-stroke sounds better than a 2-stroke and you wouldn't need to run it at full throttle to power a loco.

I would go for the spark ignition version there is a lot less oil used when running on petrol. Add a bigger flywheel and it should be able to go really slow.

Perhaps worth mentioning the above advice is for NiMH og NiCd cells. Lithium Polymer cells need to be treated differently.

I'm not familiar with how big a nameplate would be in 00 scale, but a fiber laser is capable of very fine detail. If you give me some dimensions I can make a test.
