Thanks, David. That really clears things up. So on a model with slide valves, OF a prototype with slide valves, the gear is correct? But when the  prototype has piston valves , the model's slide valves need to be cross-ported. Why don't they just use piston valves on the models? in my experience it...

may I ask why the Sabre locos all required new boilers?  I highly doubt the boilers were themselves dangerous (I can say this with confidence as I own three boilers by the same boiler maker), were they just badly designed? Incidentally you have actually seen one of these boilers Tag, the funny coal...

in answer to the question, yes there is a glue that can hold the piston to the rod, its called silver solder!

Sadly Dream Steam insist on gluing pistons to the piston rods, I have had several come adrift and I now silver solder them as a matter of course to avoid further issues.

recently I clad Alderney's boiler with hard wood strips in an effort to keep the boiler from cooling too much and losing steam, I'm happy to say it made a significant improvement.

my mate Keith has a little diesel that fulfills all criteria you require, indeed his 6 year old plays with it no problem!

Its an 0-4-0 called "Danny", trouble is I can't remember who makes it!
