./myff/2042999/DSCN4600.JPG My Bertie has just celebrated its 10th birthday back in December, doesn't seem like that long ago I was at Doncaster collecting it. As with nearly all Roundhouse locos it ran perfectly out the box, easily controllable and powerful. The first alterations were the brass ca...

As long as they are oiled and the water drained there is usually no problem with long term store, the normal casualty is the batteries in the RC gear.

I wouldn't worry about the plastic worm, I've got an IP Danny which is a similar size to the loco you have. It has run hundreds of real miles and shows no wear to the gears at all. I think the idea behind having a metal gear and plastic worm is when the gears do get worn, the plastic worm goes first...

If a loco has come with a name it has kept it though the rest are a complete jumble, usually just a name I liked.

The Forney was fitted with them and don't look dissimilar from the shape of yours, having a larger cylinder diameter than the valve chest.

If you have a look on the Roundhouse website all their colours are listed. If its not, send them a quick email and they will be able to tell you the RAL number. Pheonix paints stock the roundhouse touchup pots which will match, I'd add the link but they have updated their site and I'm having trouble...

I'm sure its possible to make them work, how reliable they would be is another matter. The parts involved will also end up very small to keep them near scale, the originals not being that big to begin with.

Kerr Stuart Drawing

Does any one know if a drawing for the tiny Kerr Stuart locos from the Dundee gas works has appeared in print anywhere. The one from the narrow gauge museum has moved to Beamish and has got me thinking again.

Nice little loco you have there. Couple of tips if I may. Start on charcoal soaked in METHS not paraffin, the paraffin leaves an oily residue in the tubes making the soot stick. As for pipe connectors have a look for the quick release fittings used in pneumatics or 16mm scale water top up valves, th...

Out of curiosity, how did you remove the driving wheels to get at the slip eccentrics?
I cheated and asked Roger at Roundhouse very nicely to do it for me, he also put the wheels back on.

It is possible to retro fit a Bertie with Hackworth valve gear, the major issue is removing the current eccentric rod.

If the fire goes out slowly you may have an air leak in the smokebox. Make sure the area around the door is clean and that the steam/ exhaust pipes are sealed in. It might also be worth checking that there is a nozzle on the end of the blower pipe. Anthracite needs a good, red charcoal fire and a de...
