Re: A Plastic Decking Experiment
Today we inserted a couple more bits of framing, and the first piece of decking – 40cm wide and just under 2 metres long. We had to scrape the ice off the top of the frames when we started this morning. It looks like the box of 1000 plasterboard screws are not going to be enough. DSCF4574 cropped an...

Re: A Plastic Decking Experiment
Work continues, and a major portion of the framework is now probably complete. DSCF4570.jpg Completing the framing round the bushes is next, and then it will be sorting out the bridges abutments. I am hoping to be able to use the (removable) bridge that I only rebuilt last year without much alterati...

Re: A Plastic Decking Experiment
More external and internal framework has been happening. DSCF4553 cropped resize.JPG The more the parts come together, the stronger it gets. But still great care is needed to keep everything flat and square. All the outside square parts are now in place, and I will be trying to get most of the inter...

Re: A Plastic Decking Experiment
Thank you Philipy.
The overall plan is that there will no white bits showing when we have finished.
The outside vertical faces will be painted black.
The decking, which starts off all white, will eventually be completely filled in between the ballasted track-work with some form of scenery.

Re: A Plastic Decking Experiment
The framing is beginning to take shape. Getting everything straight, level, and parallel to other parts is not something to be rushed, but I am sure that it should ensure that subsequent parts fit more easily. DSCF4545.JPG We have changed over from using wood screws started in small pre-drilled hole...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
Another bit of background filling between track and retaining wall was replaced yesterday.
Separate bits in each archway seems to work, although I shall probably paint the edges green rather than black next time.

Re: A Plastic Decking Experiment
Nothing has put us off so we decided to start. The Material was ordered on Monday and turned up Thursday, but a couple of lengths of one item was not what I had expected, so has been changed - I thought I ordered a couple of lengths of 35mm x 35mm x 5mm thick angle section - I had been told that 35m...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
Start to tidy up round the Loco Shed, which had been repositioned slightly, with some filler boards. I have tried to give the grass a bit more texture, so have used scouring pads and string (twine), suitably painted and varnished. I have not used this before, so we will have to see how well this wea...

A Plastic Decking Experiment
Having recently had trouble with the some of the FBGR’s areas of timber decking, we had started to replace parts of it. The main problem was the rotting of the timber – some supports lasting less than 7 years. We started with a couple of rectangular areas using plastic rain water pipes for posts wit...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
The loco shed is POLA 330911, and one of the earliest items bought for the railway, back in 2008 I think, when all I was scratch building was rolling stock. It is currently being advertised as available from Top Slots n Trains at £210 reduced down to £173. I don’t think we would have paid anything l...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
Back to the FBGR. Here is the latest, with the replaced section of decking backed up by the re-painted factory background and the loco shed replaced (in a slightly revised location / orientation) with track going into same. DSCF4373.jpg Now we can start to fill in the places round the shed and track...

Re: Paint Colours
Your original post asked for a chart of available colours.
The table / list as supplied in http://www.paint4models.com/ would appear to cover most of the paints available.

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
I bought the "creosote" from the local real ironmonger - one of very few left. It smells and feels right, even down to having to shake the container to incorporate some sludge in the bottom, although the lable may not have the "creosote" name. I will get a pic of the container ne...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
The loco shed area has been re-decked in treated timber as before. DSCF4287 resized.jpg Proper creosote was used, nice and smelly. This area is strong enough to be able to walk on – necessary while attaching the fence buildings/laying track etc. The fence plastic retaining wall and the Post hotel ha...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
Dear LNR, We had been aware for a couple of years that some of the early timber-work on the FBGR had been deteriorating, and we had done some patch repairs to keep it looking tidy, but the collapse of one abutment where we have a lift-out bridge meant that we could no longer run trains over the whol...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
Another little building was taken down to the FBGR today, and the area of recently renewed decking is gradually becoming more populated. This time something new (for me) was a corrugated iron shed. This was made using aluminium from backing trays, corrugated and formed over a foamboard and plasicard...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
There is some good stuff out there, and if you don’t despair at never being able to get any where near the quality of these, you might just get a little inspiration. Here is a couple more: http://www.boredpanda.com/realistic-miniature-rooms-museum-cinema-dan-ohlman-france/ http://www.modvid.com.au/h...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
Yes markoteal, I could do that, and it would probably be best as a separate topic – next time I start something mainly foamboard perhaps, although the story of me filling up my scrap-bin until I have enough pieces that happen to fit together, and then slowly spilling paint over it may not suit every...

Re: Recent Stuff on the FBGR
Yes Rik, and playing around with the different inserts can give you a few different finishes.
Don't start with a whole building, just do a bit of a wall to get the feel of the stuff, as here,
