Always the best way to do it. Put the flame where the heavier-than-air gas is, not where it might be.

How good does that look? Gorgeous!

I can't help but feel it should visit the Isle of Man for testing. Or Chama. Or Durango.

Re: Saddle Tank Info

Sorry, I can't think of a commercially produced Hackworth valve gear loco available at the moment. Prescott locos change hands for robust 4-figure values these days, unusual to find one where the first digit is a "1". The first Roundhouse Hackworth gear appeared on Pooter. No angled cylind...

Re: Saddle Tank Info

It IS a Robin built by the late John Prescott. They came in both side tank and saddle tank forms, and in this case, coincidental names. He also did a version without tanks but with a tender called Wagtail. Roundhouse no longer supply (their second incarnation of) Hackworth valve gear as none of thei...

Ah yes, but they screwed up on that latest version of Murder On The Orient Express. Both real and dummy locos were used, but they put the smoke deflectors on the dummy upside down. Continuity? We'll have none of that here...!

Re: Condenser question

Injectors do not work with warm water, the colder the better. The cold water condenses the steam jet completely, allowing its velocity to be imparted to the water. Some years ago a water tanker company thought they were being helpful when they delivered a tanker of warm water to a main-line steam ra...

Re: Interesting question .....

Back in the day, staff were smaller, obedient and disposable. They did what they were told to do, even if it meant wrapping themselves around a crank axle with an oil can. Later, it was realised that by having it all hanging outside there was little need to go underneath, making life more pleasant f...

Re: Any members that live in the EU?

You'll be lucky to get one. Joep told me in October "Because of retirement I produce limited numbers for the EU only (mainly Germany and the Netherlands).".

Other suppliers of coal-fired boilers are available.

Re: 16mm scale "Linda"

Looks great! Brass name and works plates from MDC in about six weeks, about £26 a pair, and they were matched to the full-size plates and look great. To the best of my knowledge, other than when it was black (!), Linda has never had a black cab front. Blanche certainly did though, reminding us that ...

Re: Best paint or other medium for real wood

Nothing wrong with Humbrol now that production has come back to the UK. In particular, gloss red now goes on and covers better than it has probably done in the last 20 years. Great stuff, I use nothing else for detail work. And at about £2 a tin it is always worth using a new tin for anything even r...

Bio-ethanol may be your friend. It is an excellent substitute for meths and is available in the UK from DIY sheds where it is sold as patio heater fuel. I use nothing else these days as it burns hotter and without noxious fumes. I can't help with run times, other than to say that I have had my Dylan...

Re: Double sided sticky pads which actually work?!

A lot of the thin stuff from pound shops is, as you say, neither super nor glue .... I remember when SG first appeared. Early 1970s, I think. It was great. It would stick anything to anything and let off smoke as it dried. When I worked in London we glued a 50p coin to the pavement outside the offi...

I had the same problem and gave up with sticky pads years ago. I now use Sellotape brand velcro. Works well, and it pulls apart and sticks back together!
