If steam appears to just be blowing up the chimney with poor performance then it could be the piston rings.

Look in builders merchants for grano dust or something similar, it is granite sized from around 5mm to dust.

Thanks very much Peter, I suspect that your climate in west Wales is very similar to mine in Lancashire, and I also suspect that the rainfall here is what has done in my ballast thus far. I already have some SBR purchased from Wickes for £18.50 for a 5L container. I'm not in any real rush for puttin...

Using SBR for fixing ballast

Long time no post (well nearly) for me on here, but the last few weekends I have been reviving my Afonglas and Nant Llwyd Railway from a state of near dereliction. After removing all of the overgrowth and tidying up the plant life (3 afternoons work) I found three sections where the concrete trackbe...

If it is not too far away for you, then it sounds like the Hampton Loade Paddock Railway at the Severn Valley Railway might be a good place to try the garratt out on, from what I have seen it is a big railway and they seem to be welcoming to visitors too.

A photo of Chris actually doing something would be a rarity in itself! :D
A photo of me at all is a fully thought out rarity....

Oh come on Dan, I gave up trying years ago!

Happy New Year everyone! I hope it contains just a bit more garden rail content for me, in 2016 it was rather lacking as my inactivity on here rather gave away.

That does have a rather more realistic throb to it then some other live diesels I've seen video of, very nice. Although I'm not sure everyone would appreciate the fumes!

For the last 1 1/2 years I've been on the staff of the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, in a variety of temporary roles. My main expertise is P-way, guarding and now shunter driver, but I have also worked in the booking office (and still do occasionally) and also alas as loo cleaner for both Ravengla...

Must admit that was my fault, you originally put 105 which I mis-corrected to 125 which of course is the number of the service car that runs with 150....!
Now corrected properly.

Another railbike, this one 15 inch gauge and being demonstrated on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway by one of the steam drivers. This machine is actually visiting from the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway, and I say "is" because although it came for the 100th Anniversary of R&ER g...

Very comprehensive review of what you've done there Doug, and the near finished result looks good. A lot of effort must have gone into getting the guards compartment smooth!

If you compare the model and the prototype, the cab on the model is definitely too tall. I think the model is only fairly loosely based on the real loco.

A very nice loco to top off a lovely railway. Me and my uncle own a Ride on Railways Trojan, alas whilst my garden has a reasonable length 32mm line the shape and slope of it (and the fire engine living in it) make a 5 inch gauge line impossible. The Trojan runs on the Joys of Life Railway in Wales ...

That loco seems to have the connecting rod inside of the coupling rod, the same as Linda, Blanche and Charles.
