Re: Curve Re-alignment
That looks much better Phil! :) I should explain to the rest of the forum that the necessity to do this work is partly my fault, last Monday Phil had a steamup and my run was unfortunately rather short as my Beddgelert could not be persuaded to go around the section which has just been relaid. I thi...

Re: Peckforton sawmill
Some of mine seem to excel at growing too big by themselves, to the stage where I am considering taking them out entirely, but it has produced quite a few scale logs whilst I try and keep them in check.

Re: Peckforton sawmill
I've got a stack of logs made from offcuts of various dwarf conifers, and they seem to have kept their bark over the course of nearly 18 months.

Re: MSS Track compatible with Peco
I'm afraid it isn't really, the Mamod track is joined by connecting tags cast into the track and the joints are staggered, so to join to anything else you have to cut the rail ends square for a start. Then the height of the Mamod rail is much less then Peco as the Mamod sleepers are much thinner, an...

Thanks very much, all of your kind words are much appreciated here! I've got to say that all of the contributors on here make moderation very easy, so thanks to you all. I can't remember the last time I had to intervene in an argument or suchlike, it was many years ago! Now back to reading all of to...

Re: 5 inch gauge track laying
A little bit of gauge widening should be fine, on the 15 inch gauge at Ravenglass we increase the gauge by 1/4 inch for sharp curves, so if anything you might want a bit more then 1/16th widening. I wouldn't move the wheels on the axle, as that will affect back to backs and other crucial dimensions ...

Re: Next idea for the live steam scratchbuilders amongst us?
Old Hall have turned out some nice stuff. IMG_3051.JPG This is the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway's Krauss pacific, to be named Whillan Beck. Although it was purchased nearly fully restored, all of the work to bring it up to the standards the railway requires has been done at Old Hall Farm by Alex a...

Re: Why Live Steam?
Must admit for me the idea of having a steam outline battery loco has just not appealed, and that even the best, mostly finely detailed 16mm steam outline is still missing something. Real steam locos share the characteristics of the prototype, of taking an amount of skill to perform its best. A stea...

Very nice, I love the removeable roof, not a technique I've ever seen anyone else use before but the end result looks great.

Re: Building the Compton Valence Light Railway gets underway
Just wondering if this should be moved to the Railways and Layouts section so I can make it ongoing? Sorry for the inconvenience. No inconvinience at all, your wish is a mods command! There are a number of railway construction projects on this part of the forum so moving it here does make a fair bi...

Re: New Archangel Loco Works website
Looks like Stewart is turning out some lovely models these days. I was lucky enough a year or three back to have a go with a virtually fresh out of the box two cylinder gas fired Sgt Murphey. The gas firing system wasn't great until the tank got warm, but once that settled it was a fantastic little ...

https://www.youtube.com/embed/76ZHSafRZkQ And I've now found this episode which even has Garden Railway content, with shots of the G scale layout at Gorse Blossom Railway in Devon and footage of a Roundhouse Dylan going round the track at Butterley. I also suspect this might be the last episode they...

Re: Railway TV programmes
There was in the 1990's an absolutely brilliant Railway series on the BBC, made by enthusiasts for enthusiasts called "Making Tracks". It was presented by Bob Symes (of course) and Mary-Jean Hasler. I vaguely remember being enthralled by it when I was little, and fortunately my grandma had...

Re: Descaling boilers
I used the gauge glass on my uncles' Taliesin as a guide, once it is starting to gain deposits then it is time to washout the fleet in turn. I tend to use watered down white wine vinegar, although I have used it neat if I think the scaling is bad. I also gently agitate the loco to slosh around what ...

Re: Wood primer
I tend to build and then prime and paint, first a couple of coats of sanding sealer, sanded back each time, then at least one coat of spray primer or wood primer, again sanded back (with then another coat of primer in necessary). Finally I paint the top coat, with as many coats as needed to get a go...

Summer on the Afonglas and Nant Llwyd Railway was all about the arrival of new motive power, Beddgelert landing at the start of June. It then ran for pretty much all running sessions for the rest of the season.

I'm in Porthmadog at the moment. Can you casually visit B lodge? Would be nice to take the old man to have a look... Not really I'm afraid, I've done a bit of volunteering at Boston Lodge and that has been what has got me in in the past. When I got the dimensions of number 12 it was an opportunist ...

Re: Bowaters FR carriages
Boston Lodge carriage works seem to be a bit notorious for not working to drawings in particular, and turning one coach out a bit different to the previous one. That said, one of the guys in the carriage works was very accommodating when I measured 12/van 5 by hand a few years ago. I've just made a ...
