Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

That really does looks excellent, from the roads and pavements all the way up to the buildings.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Some have only the top side exposed, some have been buried on one side and some have had slate walls built up to them and some are totally exposed, so I think I've covered all circumstances! They have generally been mortared to a concrete base, which was put in presumably when the house was built an...

Re: Stock Control

I have three sidings in the basement/workshop area of the house which connect to the railway via a steeply graded and sharply curved branch line (good for trying to work a steam loco hard) however this only holds a small amount of what I own, so the rest is stored in various places round the house.....

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Interesting what many have said about Thermolite blocks not being suitable for outside, part of my line has used them for the trackbed for over 10 years and touch wood there has not been any sign of delamination, the track going loose or other such issues. Indeed, some of the blocks are older then t...

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

That is one of the best bits of garden railway roadway I've ever seen, looks very convincing. The colours does look bob on for freshly laid tarmac which perhaps isn't quite what you were going for although I'm sure it will soon weather in. When is the first utility company coming in to dig some of i...

Re: Manning Wardle "Yeo" and "Exe" new builds

I do wonder what will eventually happen to Axe and Issac when the 5 engines are recreated... The L&B have not normally cared for keeping their cast off engines, see Sid for details... I'd have thought that Axe might be good for Winter trains depending on if it can run at the speeds required and...

Re: Nostalgia “Start of Miniature Railways”

Lakeside Miniature Railway doesn't currently have a steam loco, the Basset Lowke class 10 extreme rebuild/replica that used to be there "Red Dragon" was sold to Austin Moss at Windmill Farm not long after John Spencer sold the line. Since then Austin sold it on to Rhyl Miniature Railway, w...

Re: Nostalgia “Start of Miniature Railways”

Interesting article, with a few inaccuracies if you know your miniature railway history (although given the convoluted story of the Basset Lowke atlantics and the Barlow locos it's no surprise that confusion occurs!). Prince Charles (formerly at LMR but currently at Windmill Farm I believe) is a for...

Re: 'Refurbishing' the Bridge over the Greta

Looks very nice, I look forward to seeing all of the improvements at some point. With regard to the weather, that boiling hot Monday running trains at yours a few weeks ago seems but a distant memory now! Doesn't it just. Beddgelert would be the perfect engine to test the new curves! I guess I'll h...

Re: RWLR - Robin Wood Light Railway

Thing is Peter, I did the first part on 04/08 so why has it not dired after five days when we have had nothing but hot weather! Am I applying too much? I sprayed it all until it was all white in colour. Interesting, when I did my ballasting last year in warm weather (certainly much cooler then it h...

Re: 'Toy train' disrupted by landslide

Seems to be fairly standard for the DHR to be described as a Toy Railway, much the same way as the Ffestiniog described itself as such in the 1930's. Anyway for a DHR landslide that seems like quite a small one...

Mightily impressed by this, it must take a fair amount of planning and thought to put the concrete where you want it to ultimately get the village that you want.

Re: Best beginners book

Welcome to the forum, If you do want a book, then I would suggest "Practical Garden Railways" by Peter Jones, published by the Crowood Press in 2008. It covers pretty much everything although I will admit there are methods for doing things out there that are not mentioned in the book, like...

Re: Curve Re-alignment

That looks much better Phil! :) I should explain to the rest of the forum that the necessity to do this work is partly my fault, last Monday Phil had a steamup and my run was unfortunately rather short as my Beddgelert could not be persuaded to go around the section which has just been relaid. I thi...

Some of mine seem to excel at growing too big by themselves, to the stage where I am considering taking them out entirely, but it has produced quite a few scale logs whilst I try and keep them in check.

If anyone knows of branches which have bark which is weatherproof, the please let me know. I'm sure I'm not the only one with this problem.

Rik
I've got a stack of logs made from offcuts of various dwarf conifers, and they seem to have kept their bark over the course of nearly 18 months.

Re: MSS Track compatible with Peco

I'm afraid it isn't really, the Mamod track is joined by connecting tags cast into the track and the joints are staggered, so to join to anything else you have to cut the rail ends square for a start. Then the height of the Mamod rail is much less then Peco as the Mamod sleepers are much thinner, an...
