Re: PDF Baldwin the Build so far

Hi Mitch. Loving to see how you get on with your Baldwin kit. It builds in to a lovely model. I bought mine at Christmas to go with a rake of slate wagons that i am also putting together. I only finished painting it at the weekend and ran it for the first time outside this morning after having run i...

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock

That looks about 420 rivets on that tank wagon Andrew. :-)

Re: (WH)WHR Rolling Stock

Hi all. I am just finishing a PDF Baldwin tractor (gluing on the fuel tank and splashers today and adding glazing to the front windows) and thought I would add my rivitting method to this discussion. First I draw a straight line for the rivit heads (Cambrian models), then draw a cross line every 5 m...

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi all. The three wagon bodies are now cut from the frets and i have now folded and put them together with their bases ready for soldering tomorrow. I have used some old wire to hold them together while i solder. The top rails are just resting in position on their tabs so i can remove them after sol...

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi Tony.
That i like. Any chance of a rusty weathering tutorial?
Interesting about the wheels and axle boxes. I suppose over a hundred years or so parts are bound to get mixed up as wheels get saved and reused from rusted away bodies etc.

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi all. Underframes completed for the the other three wagons. Bolted axle boxes as No. 1. IMG_20200109_160704.jpg Difficult to see but the third underframe from the left is for a braked wagon. I am leaving it unbraked for now as I complete the bodies but holes are drilled ready to take the brake gea...

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Or too concentrated a solution so i have read. I have used "Jollop" at a dilution of about 1:10 but still have to watch carefully so it does not overdo.

PDF 50hp Baldwin petrol tractor.

Hi All.
I have on order the above loco and was wondering how anyone else has fitted batteries (how many?) and an rc module into the engine compartment. I am especially interested in the battery situation as there is obviously not a lot of room under the bonnet.

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi Graeme.
I will probably leave blackening alone then and go for rusty gray I think.
I know what you mean about elderly eyes. :D

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi Grant.
I use what I know as a 'nut spinner' with a little 'blu-tack' in the socket to hold the nut as I thread it onto the bolt and tighten it. This works well for me.

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi all. Latest work has been on fitting axle boxes and wheels. Included in the kit are dummy bolt and nut sets in white metal that are designed to be cut to length, inserted through the holes in the sole bars and glued into the axle boxes to make a permenent fitting. I wanted however to be able to f...

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi.
I hadn't thought of it to be honest. I have blackened brass before but only small items. Chopper couplings for example.
I might give it a go. I could always paint after if I wasn't happy with the result.

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi Grant.
I know it will be a short train initially but I have 4 kits on my work bench and that is a lot of riveting and soldering :-)

Re: Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi Andrew. I have spent quite a bit of time on the wagon over the past 10 days. Although I glued the underframe rivets in place I tried soldering the rivets in place on the wagon body and I feel I did quite well. I took this decision because I wanted to solder the body together and was not sure how ...

Re: Vale of Ffestiniog

Hi all. A belated update on my Vale of Ffestiniog. After returning the receiver board to Peter at Yatton there was found to be no fault with it. On re-installing it, the stopping problem was still rearing its head. I was getting near to giving up when it happened yet again during a cool day on my lo...

Slaters 2 ton slate wagon

Hi all. Not having posted on here for a while I thought I would share my latest build experience in real time. I opened the box at the weekend, checked the contents (looks great quality) and had a 1st read of the instructions. Today I have cut out and cleaned up the lower floor and drilled 22 holes ...

Re: Vale of Ffestiniog

Rik. The Rx was bought just before Christmas from Peter Lane at Yatton. I was running 2 motors on 8 rechargeable AA batteries (10.4 volts tested) initially and then a 6v SLA. and the problem was the same. The information given was that the rx would take 4 motors on a supplied voltage of between 6-14...
