Re: Contractors Loco Project

That's incredible. How on earth does the algorithm differentiate between copper and brass? I thought it was clever being able to recognise flesh and clothes, but reacting to steam fittings takes it to another level My guess is this is all simply machine learning. The system has a bunch of photograp...

Re: Dduallt Station building

You will have to show me how to go about drawing a chicken in blender! I can’t see where to start at the moment!!!! I'm not saying it would be a good chicken! I can make something that looks more like a Doctor Who monster right now... but I can see how I'd work on it... I did find the 3D Printing P...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

I don't know if anyone has tried it, but Tinkercad also has a code type way of doing things called blocks. Didn't even know about that - that looks really useful, especially given how easy it is to quickly get something together in TinkerCAD, and it looks like this could enable progression to quite...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

Finally came back to the shell problem... It's a really interesting one - very tough, very instructive. I've a feeling I'm going to be coming back to it for years, chipping away at improving it with each new trick I learn in OpenSCAD. I certainly haven't cracked it yet, although managed to model eac...

Re: GVT in miniature

BTW - I wired up the loco this afternoon - a couple of li ion phone cells and a Deltang Rx65a. I decided I didn't fancy going back to track power. Seems to work ok. I so much prefer remote control with the Deltang system, I plan to try doing this with one of my 009 locos when the round tuits finall...

Looks great Rik. It's been a long while since I modelled in O-16.5 and back then 3D printers weren't a thing, so it's really interesting to see how good your prints are looking in 7mm scale!

Got my replacement print-bed stickers (also got a new plate just to have a spare) and now printing without issues. Will post a pic once I have it assembled!

Re: Kerr Stewart 4420 - Live steam and 3D printing

I now have a running chassis. The steam motor is easily removable by undoing two nuts and bolts, and the chains are all connected. I have added video of it running on compressed air at 20psi. The reverser does allow good control of both direction and speed - and I am sure could be controlled by a s...

Re: Dduallt Station building

I agree with everyone - there are plenty of tools, but you spend so much time learning and doing the work, you don't want to throw away the time you've invested in it, unless you are sure another tool will enable you to achieve your ends appreciably faster! It seems to me that OpenSCAD is good for d...

Re: Signal box Refurbishment

This is looking really good. Looking at prototype photos for inspiration I had noticed that almost all signal boxes had sliding sash windows. Also, I always like it when doors, windows etc are modelled with the ability to be opened and closed. I thought it would be nice when, for example, I'm runnin...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

I have had success with your domes and flares. I can now print any dome I like with minimal changes, I can't thank you enough for that  Excellent! I'm still finding OpenSCAD fascinating, and enjoying the new uses it can be put to... How would you go about something like this? I can't even ...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

I certainly liked the idea that 'designs' could be shared using just a text file - and by changing base variables, one design could be very simply resized or modified... Yes, I really like this too. I found Solid Edge Community Edition and although it took more effort to learn than SCAD had, it's m...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

Wow! That looks excellent!! Even with the rendering time, it's a lot better than I could achieve with TinkerCAD. I also have an old (7 years old and not high spec) laptop and it took less than 10 mins to render, so no issues there, it gives a great finish and easy to change, liking it so far :D Goo...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

Hats off to you though Simon. :D Thank you - incidentally, rotate_extrude() would be an excellent way of creating a hat to 3D print  Let's come back to this: The dome looks fantastic, however it's only good for a flat boiler. The dome for a round boiler needs the flare to change inline with th...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

This doesn't help with the dome problem... but I did find, in Mastering OpenSCAD, both the mirror transformation and a neat trick with a for loop that helps with symmetrical objects - such as my headboard above. Take for example the cylinders I used for the cutouts in the headboard. I can take this ...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

The dome looks fantastic, however it's only good for a flat boiler. The dome for a round boiler needs the flare to change inline with the size of the curve of the boiler. If you can do the code for that, it would be extremely useful, especially for those of us who struggle with any type of programm...

Re: Using OpenSCAD to produce drawings for 3D Printing

Have you figured out a way of getting the flare at the base of a loco dome or chimney with OpenSCAD? It's one of the trickiest things to do in TinkerCAD and I've still not yet mastered it. This is a great question. But not an easy one! Especially as I've never made a dome virtually or physically. I...
