Re: Peckforton sawmill

Between the three of us those pulleys are are looking pretty good Rik.
I like the carriage, log dogs, etc too, well done.
Looking forward to seeing this all finished, but possibly not till after India?

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Yes, I thought that too, was just be silly really. Although given that chess men come in different sizes, a 1/24 set might work if there is such a thing. Actually, short lengths of plain plasticard rod, might be enough to suggest the pieces?

Re: Track occupancy indicator

Thanks for the link, Rik, very interesting.
Having got that far ( if I was up to the electronics, which I'm not!!) I think I'd be tempted to fit N/C reed switches in the locos, and solenoids under the track, powered from the Stop aspect, to actually stop the loco's and physcally prevent crashes.

Re: Time to build a railway...but where?

Thanks Rik, I was hoping someone might volunteer to 3D print some chess pieces for me! On second thoughts.... there might be some out there already in the dolls house market or from a Chinese supplier? I hate to admit defeat, but I think 16mm chess men are beyond me, and I suspect beyond this parti...

Very nice Tom, good to see that low speed.
Needs a driver though, that big open cab looks awful empty.

Re: Loco lamps

Rod, If you are using superglue for tiny plastic parts, it's no wonder you get it everywhere! Try using a proper solvent, as Rik is suggesting, and you'll get on much better. Solvents by definition ARE water resistant, since they weld the two separate plastic pieces into one homogenous mass and then...

Re: Mould

First thing to do is identify the source of the dampness that is causing the problem. Until you cure that, anything else is a waste of money. However in answer to your original question, PVA can go mouldy itself, so it won't cure the problem and may make it worse.

Rik, I don't want to hijack Grant's thread, but when I saw your sawmill in position earlier, I assumed that you would be building something exactly along these lines to off-load logs.

Re: Peckforton sawmill

Agree with Philip about the man up a ladder… I could always have one of the signs with partially completed lettering and the signwriter up the ladder ....... No, actually, the poor signwriter would probably do the lettering on the ground and then have the sign hoisted up ..... actually that could b...

Re: A P.O. van for the E&D

Some months ago I drew up a van for complete 3D printing, but having done an experimental partial print I came to the conclusion that it was not really the sensible way to go, requiring far to much cleaning up. That's a much more rational use of rapid prototyping than I usually see. Too many people...

Certainly looks a lot better now, Mark.
I still have the feeling that the problem is more a question of something still not quite square and true, than quartering.

Re: A P.O. van for the E&D

It’s a shame that P.O. vans were rare on narrow gauge, there is something about a train of P.O. wagons that is very attractive. Andy Yes, I'll restrain my muti-coloured train instincts! :) However, the thing is that Bench Mills Ltd is about the only part of the Bench Hall estate that makes any mone...

Re: A P.O. van for the E&D

The buffers were printed separately to the underframe, because it is easier to print and gives a better finish with the slot facing upwards, so these were glued on prior to the body being attached to the chassis. P3130002.JPG The next step was to draw and print the van strapping. Both sides and both...

Re: A P.O. van for the E&D

I like the compensation arrangement. Does it work on both ends or just one?. Just one end. The whole point of the system is that effectively it creates a "3-legged stool" effect. At one end you have both wheels on the track and at the other end the vehicle is supported only in the centre ...

Re: Now....what should i do with this?

Mark, I must say that, as Rik's first thought, my immediate thought was Quartering.
It's difficult to tell at the speed it goes though! Any chance of slowing it down and posting another vid?
Another thought would be that one(or more) wheels is not square on the axle.

A P.O. van for the E&D

Back in January I fancied building some new stock and decided to start with a PO van. The only 'industry' I have is a windmill and a water mill, so a milling concern had to be the obvious ( if slightly OTT) owner. The design is not based on any real prototype, just a typical generic van. Some months...
