Can I ask a dumb question and one I have wondered for a while. Now you have cut the wheels from the bar, how will you make the flanges and any dish or recesses in the wheels as I would not know where to start to mount this in a lathe now? Drill the middle and put a bolt through it? I just don't kno...

A start has been made; wheel blanks. I faced off, rough turned the OD, and sawed the blanks off at work today. These wheels are going to have LGB style 3 mm deep flanges.

I have always made all the parts myself before, but possibly I may buy some fittings.

I'm scaling the plans up to suit the big De Winton in my profile pic. The De Winton has a 4' wheelbase, where as Wild Rose has a 3' 3" wheelbase.

I am enthused to build Dave Watkins' Wild Rose III as my next loco build project.

Right, I've had most of the valves apart (one inlet, and two outlet side). I found some white water deposit on the ball of the check valve above the bypass on the outlet side, close to the boiler. Everything has been polished up and reassembled. I was shocked at the white deposits, our tap water is ...

Had a longish run of the loco. It went OK, except that the axle pump didn't pump. I kept the loco in steam with the spray bottle.

I need to look at the pump valves

This week I've had the Baldwin on the bench. This loco hasn't been run for over 3 years. I built this loco from a kit. Here we are, the first proper run, and on the new track. Plenty of smoke; the garden was bathed in the sweet aroma of castor oil. Most of the run was in first gear, but the last bit was in second

The loco is very powerful in first gear - scale 5 mph. The motor runs at idle - 5000 rpm!
