Re: Pen-Y-Bont A new portable garden layout
the weight is no too bad. the bare 'baseboards' and the track base are all lightweight plastic. The only soil is between the tracks and is 2in deep or less so the weight is not really a problem. Just need to keep the boards level whilst transporting hence the need for two people. I have dismantled a...

Re: Pen-Y-Bont A new portable garden layout
OK Due to the design brief, no wood could be used in the baseboard construction. So like Hambleden, the starting point was polycarbonate roofing sheets to which was bolted 2in deep plastic plant trays. These were fitted with 2in expanded foam insulation sheets painted matt black as a base for the tr...

Re: Pen-Y-Bont A new portable garden layout
thanks I am sure it will attract a lot of attention if and when we ever get to exhibitions. I am hoping to be ready for 2022 but I have a lot of new stock to build because of my change in gauge. Here's a first batch of Slaters etched brass slate wagons suitably weathered as I hate pristine stock. ht...

Re: Pen-Y-Bont A new portable garden layout
yes, the main scenic boards are 4ft x 2ft and weigh around 20Kg depending on how wet or dry the soil is, but are a two man lift more because of the size and need to keep horizontal rather than the weight. The back scenic boards with the trees are 4ft x 1ft are are quite manageable. The rest of the s...

Pen-Y-Bont A new portable garden layout
After 5 years and 30+ exhibitions it was time to think about a replacement for my 'G' scale 45mm gauge Hambleden Valley layout. It had to be something different. Hambleden was unique in using radio controlled live steam locos on an end to end layout involving lots of shunting of rolling stock. So th...

Re: Radio Controled Summerlands FX Chuffer
Hi Hugo I have thought about this in the past. I don't think you could control the FX chuffer. There's no room in the chimney and any device connected to the FX would be very obtrusive and difficult to get the circular motion required. However, the FX basically works by varying the size of hole in t...

Re: Roundhouse Valve Timing
Thanks Tony
The drawing helped me with what was going on, rather than specific valve opening timing, but I'll do that when I get the chance.

Re: Roundhouse Valve Timing
Haven't had a chance to try further, but have drawn out the sequence of events for crank, slide valve and piston for one wheel revolution which helps clarify where everything is and which way it is travelling for any given wheel position.

Re: Roundhouse Valve Timing
one other difference I have noted is that not only does the chassis run very freely, it does not build up any compression when pushed along the track. If I push other Roundhouse locos, compression builds in the system such that when I let go, they roll backwards a short distance.

Re: Roundhouse Valve Timing
Thanks Tony No the chassis runs really freely, there are no tight spots anywhere. I'll see if I can post a video of what it does. I can get various patterns of exhaust beat by fractionally moving the return cranks (I have not pinned them yet) or by the slide valve settings, but nothing so far has pr...

Roundhouse Valve Timing
Can anyone offer any advice on setting up the valve timing on a Roundhouse 0-4-0 chassis I have built a new chassis from a Roundhouse kit and just can't seem to get the timing right for an even 4 beats. I have set it up as per the Roundhouse instructions. ie the return cranks are correctly set at 90...

Re: Radio Controlled Quarry Hunslet
Wow, well done you. I think this is a bit beyond my capabilities, especially carving out the resin, so still looking at other options. I think my speed controller and receiver are smaller and can fit in various places under the floor, in the coal bunker or in the boiler tube. I want to be able to ga...

Re: Radio Controlled Quarry Hunslet
Thank you for the replies Rik
That's useful as I never buy anything from ebay
More investigation required as to what will fit, it's a very small loco

Re: Radio Controlled Quarry Hunslet
I didn't realise I could get 3.7v from an AA sized battery. I could get three in the boiler tube depending on the size of the Rx/ESC I am thinking of using a deltang so need to check the sizes. The boiler tube is 30mm diameter and 90mm long. An alternative might be to put a constant 12v on the track...

Radio Controlled Quarry Hunslet
I am currently building a Slaters quarry hunslet kit and I would like to radio control it with batteries rather than use track power? Has anyone done this and what did you use? I think I can get a combined receiver/speed controller inside the boiler but batteries are more of a problem I think it has...
