+1 for not needing to steam-up to enjoy the railway. I find recent the battery loco from GRS is perfect for just trundling around slowly with a its tippers in tow. Forget the second bit, that's overcomplicating things.
1. Glue branch to batten.
2. Run batten against the fence, with branch running through blade.

Have you got access to a band saw? Mount you chosen branch to a thin board (hot glue) and then take slices by running said board against the fence and moving it over by 4mm each time. If the back scenes are for photographic purposes, you could always create temporary green screens and add your own backgrounds in Photoshop afterwards. Would this be considered ethical?
