Re: What are the ins and outs of plastic rail?

An oval of plastic track used on a table indoors is not the same as installing it outside where it will be impacted by terrain and changes in temperature (the question asking how is expansion managed by the OP led me to believe he was asking for how to use plastic track outside). I don't think plast...

Re: What are the ins and outs of plastic rail?

Heat (gas locos should be fine but coal or meths fired will melt the track), weight and metal wheels are going to be an issue running live steamers on poorly made plastic track that is intended for toy train sets.

Electric locos should be fine using plastic track though.

Re: 5" gauge 0-6-0 Sweet Pea

These were some open cab ideas I had (purely chosen as they would be easier to make) before I decided I wanted a Kerr Stuart Wren style closed cab which I think will suit the loco given the size of the new chimney: IMG_20200409_133524-01.jpeg Reshaping the raised section still didn't look right to m...

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

Thanks for sharing the video, I am very much in awe of what you have achieved.

Hopefully my next house move will allow me to build a small line to have a play on with my loco (when the kids finally move out!)

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

- getting the suspension & valve timing to work together. With hackworth gear the distance from the weigh shaft to the rear axle has quite a bit of effect on the valve events, so getting the "ride height" correct is important. My Sweet Pea also uses Hackworth gear which required the s...

What panel material are you using for baseboard as it looks like wood?

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

The steam turret on the boiler is nicely machined (I want to remake mine one day) and a pair of injectors over a hand or axle pump backup should be fine providing you have good quality injectors that are reliable (I use Chiverton type as recommended by my club).

Thanks for all the info.

What about paint brushes, do you buy anything specialist or just use once and throw away?

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

Prep was simply a flap wheel in the grinder, clean off with white spirit on a rag, leave to dry, then brush the paint on. I like to leave it a full week between coats, but two coats is usually more than enough when used "neat". That's the process I followed with my tender but I used a pri...

Re: Jynn: a 7 1/4" gauge wren

I would like a complete run through with how you went about preparing and painting her.

I am done using Halfords rattle cans and want to move on using to brushes and durable paints that can withstand real world use.

Brands, where you purchased items from - more details the better please!
